Help, Antelope European mount smells (like antelope)
I've been having my antelope European mounted for the past few years. Had one done two years ago, no problems. Brought another antelope to the same guy last year (shot about 2 miles away from the previous one). It looks fine but still smells like antelope. Its been hung in my garage for several months with no change.

Any suggestions on what to do?

Thanks

Too much oil in the skull. Try putting it in some hydro peroxide (pull off the horns)for a few days. If that doesn't work look on one of the taxidermy supply sites for a descenter.

Actually, to degrease the skull, I would suggest soaking it in white gas (Coleman fuel). It might not hurt to go underneath and drill some tiny holes into the areas of thick bones to give the grease a place to escape easier. Pick and choose where you drill so that when displayed, you won't see the holes. Soak in white gas for 2-3 days, rinse very well with water, and let dry.

If it's discolored or not white, then put in the hydrogen peroxide but for no longer than about 8 hours. If you leave it in too long, the peroxide will eat up the bone. The white gas won't hurt it.

Good luck!

And so if you meet a hunter who has been to Africa, and he tells you what he has seen and done, watch his eyes as he talks. For they will not see you. They will see sunrises and sunsets such as you cannot imagine, and a land and a way of life that is fast vanishing. And always he will will tell you how he plans to go back. (author: David Petzer)

This may seem odd but you might soak it in Febreeze after giving it the white gas treatment. That stuff works!
