bisonhunter1Rugs/tanned hides storage question
Looking to do a house move later this summer and as part of the getting ready, I have a number of animal rugs and some plain tanned hides that I will need to get ready and store for a period of time (+/- 4 months) as part of this process.
What is the best way to pack and store these hides? Cardboard moving type boxes, plastic boxes, wood boxes, etc. and is there anything I should place in these containers (ie. mothballs) to help with this storage process??

impala#03I would think mothballs would be a good idea. I spray my rugs/hides in my house with a spray that kills all types of insects that like leather/hides/ animal rugs.
Biggest danger is moisture, without sufficient ventilation to prevent mildew. I would wrap in cloth to allow it to breath then in breathable containers. Tanned hide do not last forever as they can also dry rot like old shoes. Actually raw hides properly dried out will last a lot longer provided they are kept dry
I have some deer hides that I vacuum sealed. They are still good after several years. I know they make some large bags for comforters and the like that you remove the air with a regular vacuum. That might be an option.
