Big Horn Sheep Cape/Hide
A friend of mine killed a big horn ram last fall. He skinned it out for a life size mount and now want to sell the full hide. The hide has been frozen ever since, but unthawed once before a sale fell through. Where should I send him to put out the word and how much is it worth?

Mary Hilliard-KruegerI'ld give Cabela's a call. They offered a client of ours and everyone who drew a sheep tag in Az., $3,000 for their skins (before their hunts last year). That may have been for the horns too.
You can also try Taxidermy.Net Forums for sale catagory. Their worth can range from $1,000 (skin only) on up depending on quality, size and how it's been cared for.
Kind regards,
Mary

Mary Hilliard-KruegerJust found this on the Taxidermy.Net Forums(original post dated May 8th).
'Hey Folks, I am in desperate need of a Big Horn Sheep Cape. Please call Ojai Valley Taxidermy.805-646-7482. Thank you, Chuck Testa'
Regards,
Mary
If I were you the first call I would make would be to Dewayne Dewey in Cody. Then I would call John Cargill in Dubois. Both of these men are close to you, very fair, and will treat you right. I will leave their phone numbers off this page, but an easy search on Google will give you their numbers.
Rockies are worth less than Deserts. I have seen early season Rockies sell for $600-1,000. Late season perfect Rockies are in the $1,000-1,500 range. Marginal Deserts seem to be around $2,000-2,500, while a great Desert can fetch upwards of $5,000.
I was at the FNAWS convention here in Utah a couple months ago and there were many capes advertised. The most expensive I saw was a Desert cape for $4,000, with many Rocky capes in the $800-1,000 range.
That is what I have personally seen, hope it helps.
Thank you all, I will pass this information along.

CouestaxiJust a note on Arizona Sheep it is currently against the law to buy or sell any part of a bighorn sheep taken in Arizona after October 1st, 2005. This includes horns and capes.

CouestaxiMary - Hope Cabelas didn't receive any repercussions. Any idea where this law came from? It really hurts our business the most.
