Docvideo, BB taking moose calf
Well, as ugly as it is, this is what happens on a regular basis.
BB taking moose calf.

MrHawgI'm not sure what's ugly about that. Nature in action.

DocUgly in terms of death to a baby moose...
I'm with you, just nature in action. Anyway, I like moose meat too.

cwilsonI would have thought that the bear would have killed the calf more quickly.

RMillerThat was pretty cool.
I bet the bear would have killed it quickly if it was a smaller bear.
That bear looked pretty big and was letting the calf scream for bragging rights to the lesser bears.
It reminds me of why I carry a handgun for backup. It is not necessarily to stop a bear in mid charge. I carry a handgun for one last chance to defend myself while the bear drags me off into the woods screaming.

BrentEverybody's gotta eat.
On the other hand, if it was a wolf instead of a bear, the hue and cry (especially the cry) would be deafening....

ReloaderYep, they gotta eat. Shame he didn't kill it on the spot. I hate to see something suffer regardless what it is.
I don't know squat about Moose but, I thought the cows were known for being very aggressive when they had calves? I'm surprised that she didn't try and run the bear off.
Good buddy of mine lives in AK and from what I've heard you aren't supposed to get anywhere close to a cow w/ calves.

No doubt. These are generally the people who think ecosystems shoud run according to what most benifits their hunting rather than let nature determine its own population densities.

dakorMuch more humane then a bullet for sure.

I have no problem with a bear eating I just wish it would have killed the calf on the spot.

Nice imagery!

While up deer hunting Maine last month, a guy came in to the local bar to say that his buddy had just gotten video footage of the exact same scenario, with calf moose and black bear. Also heard another guy say that one of his buddies had pictures of a moose he found dead in the woods with an obviously broken back. A large dead tree had come down in some wind it seemed, and punched the moose's time card for him on the way down . Bad luck indeed, old chap!

Brent, thanks for the giggle.

DocA couple of the guys I met in Canada (my guides) said that a bear that size may not even kill a calf moose. They usually start eating them alive, since there is no real struggle.
I personally have no knowledge on the subject, but that bear seemed to be more in a hurry to take the calf away from mom than to kill it.
Who knows, maybe the cow was leading its calf to the water but the calf hesitated. Cow must have some past experience with bears.

I think that the only reason that the bear didn't kill the calf on the spot was because it was trying to get away with his meal from the people on the other side of the water.

meteDon't forget that the cute robin on your lawn is just as vicious ,it hunts, kills , and eats worms !!

calgarychef1Bears have a hugh effect on the moose population. I've heard that they may kill up to 60% of the calves each spring. I don't mind hunting bears every now and then and I'd hate to see them gone but I enjoy hunting moose more. It's too bad they have such a large effect. The PITA freaks should see how animals really die in the wild, hunting is so much more humane. There's absolutely no reason for an animal to kill another
before beginning to eat it-other than to stop it squirming. It's just a meal to them and they lack the intelligence to have compassion to put something out of its misery first.

dustofferBear-moose, coyote-whitetail or pronghorn fawn, feral cat-quail/songbirds, there are lots of these associations to be described.
So, what do I do? I whack the coyotes and ferals just about every chance I get.
