Paid in advance for a 500 class bill. I wonder if they threw in the ear tag and tracking collar for free.

jdollarNothing shot inside a high fence should ever be considered a record book animal. But since the SCI book is all about making money, nothing there is a surprise.

Bull SprigIf that's your thing so be it but those animals don't belong in any record book.
I meant to ask....what does that elk have to do with Idaho? It could have been shot at any game farm in almost any state that allows it.

DLSSorry Ray, high fence elk don't count.
And that game farm isn’t in the unit you described as having numerous 400 class bulls in it. While there have been a few 370 & 380 class bulls shot in Idaho the last few years, I’m still not aware of any actual legitimate 400” bulls to come out of any unit. Including that one north of Jarbidge you mentioned before.
25 December 2022, 22:28
AtkinsonI just passed on the picture and it stated SCI accepted it...Ive never seen anything like it, I knew it wasn't killed in 54, 55, or 60..I believed since SCI was scoring it, it was a legal kill and I never said these units had Nemours 400 class elk, I do believe there are a precious few 400 class bulls, if you don't believe thats sfine.

JBrownI can't imagine why someone would pay real money to kill and ugly high fence freak like that. I just can't understand the draw to do that.
But I feel the same way about the guys who pay a team of guides to search for a bull, only to fly in and pull the trigger once they have a monster pinned down, then head for the airport as soon as trophy phots are taken.
To each is own....

ZekeShikarya, the farm whitetail, mule deer do as much for me as that elk! = zero.
I have a buddy with more money than he know what to do with and he's successfully "hunted" farm animals and, while big, they mean nothing to people who actually hunt!
Biggest at all cost is a piss-poor way to hunt, IMHO.

It is ironic to think that the record books set up scoring systems to rank trophies and they designed them to rate the desirable attributes of "normal" trophies, and now the messed up racks of farm raised animals are landing at the top of the list.
I doubt that that was what Grancel Fitz had in mind.

Wendell ReichThat "Elk" sure does look like it has Red Stag genes in his recent past. The short beams and crowning characteristics are strong in this bull.

2th docWho gives a rat's ass anyway? I belong to a club to hunt quail and pheasant costs me $2500 a year and the birds are raised right there on club grounds and put out once a week...there are clubs like this all over North America...guess it really comes down to just how a hunter decides what animals should only be killed free range...that my friends is a personal matter.

Use Enough GunRulon Jones is the owner of Broadmouth Canyon Ranch. He has, or did have, two operations, one in Idaho and one in Utah above Ogden. His operations have been going on for at least 20-30 years. I've seen his business in years past manning a booth at the SCI Convention in Reno. Not sure if he still currently has a booth at any of the shows. He is a former all Pro football player for the Denver Broncos. Must appeal to a lot of folks to keep a business like that going for so long. IMHO, no different than other high fenced hunting operations in other parts or the U.S. or around the world. I would suppose that anyone who hunts there knows exactly what he is doing and how he is hunting. You'd have to be fooling yourself, not to.

Ray,
Would you have been interested in shooting that farm raised elk? I’m interested to know.

I would have no more of a problem killing that bull then butchering any other meat animal.

I flew home from Idaho Falls after an unsuccessful Elk hunt, listening to these two guys bragging about the … as they put it, “full on fair chase” elk hunt they did here.
Personally, I’m happy for them. They had a good time, maybe climbed a few hills and shot their Elk. Nice 6x6 bulls, 300-310 inch bulls. But they can never say they earned it.
That’s like thinking the $2000 escort they got after their hunt actually loved them. Yeah, you got a (hopefully) hot chick to spend the evening with you, maybe fooled some folks into thinking you could actually pull that class of tail, but you can’t lie to yourself. You bought that elk and you bought that ass.

AtkinsonNo I would not shot that bull unless it was free, lots of steaks on him Id shoot a Herford cow under the same circumstances...
Keep in mind over half the hunting concessions in Africa are high fenced, and many here have hunted on them, as well as in Texas or the US in general, some of the most vocal on this thread have done just that..It seems to be OK in Africa??? Why then is that?..Its a holier than thou thread..
I hunted high fenced ranches and booked some high fenced hunts in by lifetime a couple of times, big concessions as have all booking agents, and most hunters have..Not my favorite hunting, I know many on AR that have so be careful about throwing rocks in a glass house.

Ray, you are saying that you wouldn’t shoot that elk unless it was free, but you fly to Africa and pay to hunt similarly farmed/high-fenced game...
So maybe you should tell us why it is OK in Africa, but not here, seeing that you are ok doing it in Africa, but not here......

larryshoresMiscellaneous comments:
1- It’s legal.
2- on many animals, SCI has a different record for “estate”’critters. No idea if elk are among those .
3-SCI does in fact charge for the entries. It is called fund raising . All the things they do, for example, monitoring legislation world wide is not cheap.
4-Shooting world record inside a high fence does nothing for me . It is a function of the size of the bank account .
5- All high fences are not the same . Some can be quite sporting. Some aren’t.
6-Many places in Southern Africa are high fenced. Particularly the RSA.
7-sometimes these hunts are done just to have fun. A group of 8 of us just did a high fenced deer hunt . We had a blast without regard to the hunting. I’d go again even if I didn’t hunt. The purpose of going was the fun and fellowship. Yes, we shot massive bucks . I could have cared less if I fired a shot.
I imagine this guys motivations were different given that the record book is mentioned.
Carry on gentlemen.
