I've dined here twice while in Denver. First was for work, and second was for a father/son weekend with my old man.

An excellent place with Old West theme and decor. A great place. It's on my list every time I'm in Denver as is the County Line Barbeque in the SW corner of the city.

Yup, it's a great place, the food is good and the decor is fantastic. It oozes history from every creaking floorboard and there's nothing "PC" anywhere in sight. But....pen raised game just ain't the same as the "real thing". I go there anyway.

One of the oldes resturants in the city. It has Liquor License #1 for the entire state. That means it was the first resturant to be able to legally sell booze.

Lots of mounts, but most of them are pretty old and frankly, they are in pretty bad shape. But it is still pretty cool to see.

Another neat resturant in the Denver area is called The Fort. It's located by the town of Morrison and is modeled after an old trading fort. It's website is www.thefort.com.

I was born and raised in Denver but haven't lived there since 1985 (I got to Texas as soon as I could). I go to the Buckhorn Exchange every time I go back. Yep, the mounts are old, but that is part of the charm. Growing up, going to the Fort to eat was a big deal. They were serving buffalo steaks in the early '60's before it was chic...and they had a live black bear out front....very cool for kids. Of course, that was also pre-PETA and their crowd. The Fort is designed to look like Bent's Fort, where the mountain men used to come down to for their Rendezvous. I always liked looking at the big bear traps too, again pre-PETA.

We went to the Fort last Sat evening. I had the Buffalo Fillet. It was great. Appetizers were great also, Rattlesnake cake ( like crab cake) Buffalo Mountain oysters, Jalopena's stuffed with Peanut Butter and Buffalo tungue on nsome cracker deal. Fillet was served with redskins and beans almondine. We topped it off with a caramel brownie and I had a 12 year old single malt to finish. Great meal

How much was the twelve-year-old single malt?

The Buckhorn is still a great place to eat. I was there just awhile back. It is across from the railroad tracks so it's easy to visulize, mining magnates, cowboys, stock inspectors, regualators, military, politicians, and painted ladies strolling from the train and grabbing some grub in old Denver.

The bear's name at the Fort was Susie. She died of old age, so they say, and I believe she is buried in the courtyard. Probably died of Chloerestral, but what the hell. The fort is still good but not like it use to be. I enjoyed the steak gonzales and a couple of bears bloods to wash it down with. Hurrah fer mountain doins!!

The fort has a recipe book you can get at Barnes and Noble of Borders BTW.

Yep, I've eaten there a couple of times. When in Colorado.

It reminds of the Old Style Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood, SD.

I'll have to remember that the next time I'm in Denver for business. Unfortunately, that probably won't be until September, but it's going on the list nonetheless!

Clayman, what "suburbs" of Philly are you from? I grew up in Lower Bucks County and did my under grad work at Temple Univ.

Just curious as I love connecting with fellow Philadelphians!
