I think you'll be fine with any premium.

Nosler Partition, Accubond, Barnes TS, Swift A Aframe, Hornady IB..............

Nosler 150gr partition in Fedral Premium. For me, it has accounted for numerous, one shot kills on mature bulls.

Last season I used my 7 RM on a 6X6 Bull standing broad side at 156 yds. It took three 160 Accubonds to drop him. The year before I dropped a cow with one 175 gr partition just some info for your use.

I have used the 7x57 on moose, so that is a larger deer and the equivalent of being maybe 100 yards farther than an impact with the .280. I used 160gr Nosler Partitions. I have used that load on every moose I have killed-all 2 of them. Used it on a couple of caribou and probably close to 20 deer now.

I would feel comofortable with a Partition, A Frame, TSX, or soemthing along those lines.

I think the 160gr is a very balanced bullet in the 7mm bore when shooting larger game at a distance. I use 175gr RN bullets for up close things, such as bear over bait and deer stands where all shots will be fairly close.

BTW-the bullet that was used on the bull moose was the only failure of a Partition I have had. If you do a search in the "gunsmithing" forum, you will find some pics of the bullet and the story. I shot the moose about a month before I found this AR website back in '04. It killed the moose, but the jacket tore to its base and lost both cores.

I like the fact that a Partition loses its front core, but not losing its rear core. I still use them, and in fact killed one of my '06 bucks with the same load and same rifle.

140 TSX. Haven't found one yet.... (bullets, that is. The elk are 50 yards that way on the ground).

160 grain Partitions have worked well in the past.

Got to agree with the 160gr Nosler partition for any of the 7mm ctgs. Just an awsome bullet and performance.

Thanks for the information so far. Dutch, I'm not familiar with the acronym TSX. What does that stand for??
Thanks all,

I've only killed one bull elk with my .280 Remington, but when I shot him at about 215 yards, just behind the shoulder, he took several steps. I chambered another round but before I could shoot him again, he collapsed. Worked for me.

160 grains Nosler Partition with 54.0 grains of IMR 4350.

I've killed other elk with my .338 Win. Mag., and one with a .308 Win.

You do your job and the 160 grains Nosler Partition will do its.

ive taken a couple of bull elk and 4 cows and a small bull moose with the 160 nosler partition.it is an excellent bullet in the 280 for these animals. i think the moose was the only bullet ive recovered out of the bunch.

I load the 140 gr TSX for my daughter's 7mm08, Her first bull elk was shot behind the shoulders and passed clear through. He was dead in 50 yards. She also shot several African animals with the same bullet and they were all one shot kills. Recovered no bullets.

150 NP's have worked on SEVERAL elk and a half dozen plains game species. 95% were one shot kills. The exception was a big bull who stood there ......so I stuck two more into his lungs.

I would use either the 160 Nosler or Woodeigh, and the 175 gr. Noslers or Woodleighs on elk in both the 7x57, 7 Mags, or the .280. These bullet are fail proof as are the Northforks in like weight. Lots of good bullets out there these days, hasn't always been that way.

Another vote for the 160-grain Nosler for open country or 175-grain Hornady Round Nose in the timber.

I have shot 4 elk with my Model 70 .280 Rem, all using 150grain Nosler Partitions. I have shot kudu, springbok, mountain reedbok, steinbok, vervet monkeys and impala with that same bullet as well.

No lost game. It works for me very well.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
