Yes the excessive palmation is a give away for farmed deer and makes for f...ugly heads. That head looks in poor condition too, growing too fast for the minerals and nutrients available.

Interestingly, I thought "farm" the second I saw it.
I had a couple buddies hunt a farm up there and whacked a couple monsters but..... they're farm animals. Not the same as wild elk IMHO.

Disclaimer: I have zero knowledge on where this was actually shot so everything I said is shear speculation.

True to your disclaimer, of course it could have been an escaped farmed animal, we get a few red stags here in this country that have been shot after escaping from farms which can happen during storms and flooding when fences are compromised.
One of my sons has shot such a stag, it actually had some fencing wire wrapped around its antlers.

I just saw it posted on Facebook where they stated that they are waiting for SCI to measure it to confirm it is a world record. Since it is SCI and not B&C, I’m saying farmed also.

Not for everyone, but I think he's looks good.

Broadmouth Canyon is owned by some ex-Denver Broncos player. I think he owns a ranch in Utah as well.

That bull probably cost $30-60,000.

I have a cousin that shot a stag in New Zealand that was in that 450-500 inch range SCI. He paid $30,000 for it.

Kind of like hunting cattle on a ranch.

Wonder what they did to create a rack like that.
Surely it wasn't a natural growth.

One thing for sure, he did that bull a big favor by killing him.

Correction, East Texas or Central Texas Elk.

West Texas (Trans-Pecos) has real free range elk, and they certainly don't look like the elk in this story.

P.T. Barnum comes to mind, especially if the butt ugly ID bull cost somebody 60 grand.

a lot of genetics & diet is where the big antlers come from. know of a few whitetail deer farms here on the east coast that can grow some oddballs (but nicer) like this elk was

i will say high fence isn't my cup of tea, but if done right it can still be a hunt. i know of one owner that won't let people go in alone not because they're worried about someone shooting the wrong deer, but because it is a large enough area and rugged that they don't want someone getting lost. also large enough they really don't know all of their deer, so they get a few surprises every year of some dandy bucks they weren't expecting

Looks like a fat, lazy mutant from some genetic experiment gone wrong. That's just sad.
