BlacktailerNice coastal blacktail
Took this buck this morning on my place. Been looking for him since I first saw him about a month ago. He finally started chasing does and got stupid. There's a lesson in there somewhere.

SevenxbjtNice heavy buck.

CAS IIVery nice! The old guys in my neck of the woods call those "Pacific Bucks". Older, mature, big forkies. Not your typical forkenhorn by any stretch of the imagination.

Kyler HamannHeck of a local buck Russ. Congratulations.
I still haven't gotten a minute to hunt for myself. Four days left... hopefully I can get out at least for a few hours.

BlacktailerTook the deer to town to get him processed yesterday. Stopped by Bridges Sporting Goods, the local gun shop. They run a big buck contest every year and thought I would see how this one measured up. Not even close! The scoring criteria is width plus height added together (no count of points). The bucks that were in the top three were all in the 26 wide range and about 15 high for totals of 41+ inches and were all 4 and 5 pointers

This one measured 20 wide and 17 high for reference.

Mike_DettorreWell...I tell you what Russ...
Next time you have one like him spotted...call me...i will shoot him for you...he is a heck of a nice deer...those combined 40+inch deer are simply monster blacktails for the Central Coast

craigsterVery nice. I killed a similar one last year. Hope to do the same next week. As CASII says, Pacific Forked Horns are unique, they remain forks all their lives, and most don't have eyeguards. And they can get big.

Kyler HamannRuss,
For us local "kids" growing up here, that has always been the contest all of us dream about winning.
The ranches the winning bucks come from are always the stuff of local legend. There are photos flying around now of a big local buck taken recently. Some sources say in Pozo, some say Coalinga. Three counties and a 2 1/2 hour drive apart. People are pretty secretive about where they take these big ones.
My best entry was 23" and change by 17" and change. That year we didn't have as much feed as this year, but it still only came in second. There was some 27" wide freak that a vineyard manager shot. Supposedly taken on a vineyard, but rumor had it several people recognized it from the lawns of Hidden Valley Ranch, the gated community.... Oh, well I'll keep trying to win Bridge's.
You took a terrific local buck, don't let the contest bucks take anything away from that one.

SevensCongrats on the buck Blacktailer!
P.S. All this talk about Bridge's and the Central Coast makes me miss living in SLO. Good hunting, fun little town, and the best gyro sandwich I've ever had.

GuyMNice blacktail! Congratulations.
I've seen some very big forked-horn mulies too - illegal to shoot here in Washington with our 3-point minimum...
Great buck - I'd love to tag a blacktail like that someday!

and he is as big as I've seen....
I know there are always some whoppers found wherever for whatever, but I am super jealous, great buck and good on ya!
