There's a question about how it's done in South Dakota with prairie dogs. Lots of ranchers charge for access and the state pays others for poisoning. Locals check around and find the places where they can hunt without paying. It seems like a game in SD!; that's part of hunting. I shoot a lot of prairie dogs and I don't pay a trespass fee. I buy some dinners; turkeys, bring flowers and candy; come back regularly so I'm well known. There's a lot of government and Indian land in SD.

I went to Texas last year, spent over a week and went from Northern border, through Lavaca and back using my tried and true method of stopping in grain elevators, small hardware stores and lunch places and found it didn't work in the areas of Texas I tried. I had lots of offers to pay for access and big money to join hunting clubs but the professional rancher I was used to meeting in SD wasn't frequenting the places I tried.

Anyone got any contacts or ideas? I'm going back, but the SD method doesn't work well in Texas!

There are quite a few reasons. Each landowner has his own reason.

Not usually. The risks are too great. Trash, open gates, strangers with firearms, liability. Plus, the "permission" tends to grow. Let one guy hunt this weekend, he will almost always bring 3 of his friends next weekend.

Unfortunately, it's just not worth the risk.

Plus, it is common for land to already be leased out for hunting. If a guy has paid for a deer lease, he holds the rights, not the landowner (unless a deal has been made, which is highly unlikely)

If guys have pig problems, the best solution is to allow a local who runs pig traps to trap on the property. Hunting pigs is not a solution.

Why don't you Texan's come up here to MN WI or go to ID MT and trap some wolves to bring down and turn them loose. We would be happy for you to take our wolves and they would be happy to eat your pigs.

You do remember you are talking to Texans here?
