7x57 or 7x64 ?
hallo everybody Smiler
, i'm new on this forum , i'm in NW of Italy and i'm planning to go hunting in the Alps mountains ; ( chamois , roe deer and wildboard most of all , maybe red deer too )
usually the shooting distance is between150 and 250 yards , (sometimes 300yds)
I 'm not able to handle the recoil of a 7mm rem mag , i can barely "dominate" a 30.06 , in a 3.3kg (6.9lbs) rifle Frowner
I must order (it is a too long story why....) a CZ 550montecarlo , and I was thinking in 7x57 or 7x64 cal. . what are your suggestions ?
(any special suggestions for the calibers above keeping in mind that I reload all my cartridges and here in Italy we find basically only Vithavuory and Norma powders ?),
thank a lot to all

Pick the 7x57. It will do everything the 7x64 does at your shooting ranges.

Alberto,

Here's another vote for the 7x57! It's light recoil makes it a joy to shoot and trajectory out to 300 yards will be fairly flat with the right loads. Welcome to AR!

Good hunting,

Andy

If you reload and are recoil shy don't ignore the 6.5 x 57 or 6.5 x 55. Either would be a great Alpine caliber.

I'll be a little diff. here. The rifles will be the same size, I would get the 7X64. A bit faster/flatter shooting. You can always download if recoil is a problem. It's the Euro. twin to my .280, I can't think of a better all purpose Euro. hunting round.

Hmm. While the "seven" is pretty @#$! loud, I don't think it hits me as hard as the .30. According to my tables, an 8 pound 7mm Remington recoils with 19.1 ft/lbs (140@3150 FPS) while an 8 pound .30-06 hits with 20.1 ft/lbs (165@2900 FPS).

Regardles, I don't much like recoil either, and enjoy both the 7X57 (139@2800 FPS=14 ft/lbs) and the various 6.5s (140@2650 FPS=11 ft/lbs, for example.)

I'd forget about the 7X64, as it kicks nearly as much as the 7mag and the .30-06 (about 18 ft/lbs in an eight pound gun.)

Hope that helps!

thanks again
i've already got the 30.06 , the main reason is because the 7x57 is disappearing and is difficult to find 7x57 ammo (in Italy) , reloading is still permitted ,for now, but with the new gun's law in progress ....who know Frowner
beside the 06 was already in the shop that owe mw money and order a CZ rifle in 7x57 takes +o- 2months
by the way , the 06 is still in the shop due to a problem with the scope mount Frowner Frowner

thanks a lot indeed to all
all the best
