Ranger66270 win For Moose?
I am planning on taking my 270 win moose hunting this year, and I have a good load that I use for deer hunting and have so far 2 bang flops. Its quite accurate approx. 1" groups at 100yrds. I am using 140 grain Nosler Accubonds, will these bullets be good enough to drop a moose, I will only have a calf tag.

StonecreekI'd feel comfortable with that load.

Go to the African Hunting forum and check my thread on Accubonds. Lots of mixed reviews. No I would not feel comfortable with that load for moose. I've killed several and if you only have the 270 try the 150 or 160 NP or perhaps the TSX loads by Federal. If you hit a big bone with the Accubond I'm afraid you'll get no further penetration and perhaps loose your moose.

Mark

vapodogThe only way I'd use a .270 on moose was that I didn't have something bigger.
If I then decided to hunt with the .270 I'd be loading the 160 Nosler Partition or the 150 Swift A-Frame or the 150 North Fork.
It's your money.....be your own judge.

<allen day>If i wanted to use my 270 Win. on moose, I'd load 140 gr. Winchester Fail-Safes to 3000 fps. or better and go hunting. If the F-S didn't shoot for me, I'd load 150 gr. Nosler Partitions or Swift A-Frames.
Any of these bullets in lungs should bring a moose down in short order.

fredj338AS always, placement is first, but moose are big & you aren't likely to be taking shots much over 250yds. I'm sure you could get a 160grNP or 150gr Swift to shoot under 1.5moa. Have a good hunt.

Widowmaker416That's what I plan to use when I go moose hunting! 270, but the only difference between me and you, I'm using Federal factory ammo, 150 grain Hy-Shok. Took a 2000 pound Eland with the same ammo, one shot!
I'm really comfortable with it...

Good luck to you on your hunt, and have a safe journey!!!

ppodA 270 in the heart/lungs will pile up most moose within 50 yards, often sooner. My son shot a 56 inch bull with two Nosler 160 partitions at 300-350 yards- it didn't go 50 feet. My partner was worried his 270 wouldn't be "enough" for moose on an Ontario hunt. Not only did it work perfectly, but the guide tried to talk him out of it for a tip to replace his old battle scarred 30-30 which had accounted for a couple score of moose over the years.
The heart lung area on a moose is big, I have no experience with more adventuresome shots.

stubblejumperActually I find moose much easier to kill than elk. While I prefer larger caliber bullets for elk or moose, with proper bullet section the .277" bullets and even the .257" bullets will word under ideal conditions.

MikeyB150gr. Partition gets the vote for me, good combination of penetration and expansion. The Barnes Tripleshocks have the advantage of not having a core to seperate, though.

BlankWe have accounted for lots of deer, several elk, a moose, and 2 black bears with the 140 grain TBBC in my wife's 270. Love that combo - shoots less than an inch.

Mikelravy270 is the perfect one gun caliber for Ontario due to the regs there. Anything that works well for deer should be ok for a calf.
14 September 2005, 20:05
Ryan CampbellI have to go with Mark on this one. However, if you are only after a calf you should be ok. I tend to be skeptical of using the bare bones minimum in calibers when hunting big game.
The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.
I didn't learn this by reading about it or seeing it on TV. I learned it by doing it.

In Ontario you don't need a guide. (just 3 big strong friends)

<mikeh416Rigby>Some years back, I was on a Dall Sheep hunt in the Yukon. One of my friends shot a 70" spread Alaska-Yukon Moose with his .270 and 150 grain Nosler Partitions. One shot from @ 150 yards.

I just noticed that you certainly did specify.....calf.....
I'll bet that most replies missed that.....I certainly did!!!sorry..
How big are calves?...maybe 250 pounds?
You could almost leave the gun at home and go after him with a hatchet.

.375 H&H *AT LEAST*? Not bloody likely. Not unless the moose calf he wants to put down is in bronze sculpture form on someone's lawn...

I agree!
Take heavy partitons or trophy bondeds, A-frame or KJG.

SBTMy wife killed her moose with a 270, but she used 150 grain Nosler Partitons. Mark is right on about the Accubonds. Why take the chance?

For a calf moose?

The hunt is for a calf not a full grown bull moose. For a calf the 270 will be fine with any decent bullet.
19 September 2005, 07:44
CanadianLeftyStubblejumper, that is kinda funny!

I guess that we gotta remember that on average, even a calf Moose looks pretty big to most people.
Moose are fairly easy to kill and while I would just us my .300 WSM, a .270 win. will definitely get the job done, and then some.
