hillbillybearWHAT'S YOUR CHOICE OF RIFLE FOR DEER THIS YEAR
Okay the deer season is upon us. What is your chosen weapon for the task at hand?
Mine is a Model 700 rem stainless synthetic mountain rifle in .300 win mag (this particular chambering was only made 1 year -1993) topped by a 4.5 x 14x 40 Nikon Buckmaster in Leupold mounts. I'm using the Hornady 165gr. SSt Factory Load this because I am basically too lazy to do any loading.

SlingsterBlaser R93 Synthetic with 7mm-08 barrel, Leupold 1.5-5X scope, and Federal Premium ammo loaded with 140-grain Nosler Partitions.
[on edit] Because I ended up with two tags (both antlerless) I've decided to take along the 9.3x62 barrel with 286-grain Nosler Partition handloads at 2250 fps as well, just to blood it.

<biff>The past few I have used my 338 winnie with Federal prem 210 noslers, this year I am going to take my recently acquired 458 win mag just for grins and giggles, but I may take along my 338 in case I get a shot at a couple and so it doesn't get lonely

<David Boren>Holy crap hillbilly. We have both have Remington rifles chambered in 300 win mag and we both have the same scope. Im using a Remington ADL Synthetic chambered in 300 Win Mag, with a 4.5-14x40 AO Nikon Buckmaster in Leupold 2-piece STD mounts, I have had the trigger reduced to 2.5 pounds and it also sports a Harris 25C bipod.

<don>I have several rifles that I deer hunt with. For does a 243 win mod 70 with 85 grain serria HPBT with a leupold scope. This gon doesn't ruin much meat and is accurate. A 300 RUM 700 rem action in a shaw barrel with a leupold. this one does ruin meat but is fun to shoot long range. A 30-30 marlin I havent shot in years but I know I could if I needed to with a bushnell 3-9. But every year I keep reaching for my trusty 280 remington moutain rifle. Leupold scope trigger at a crisp 3 lbs and 150 grain nosler partitions. I have a lot of faith in the 280 as I've seen a lot of game fall in its scope.
19 October 2002, 06:41
p dog shooterI well just most likely use a markX mauser 30-06 for the stand and a 99 savage in 300 sav for the drives and still hunting. Or maybe by 338 06 just for the fun.
19 October 2002, 06:47
<Okie Newton>I'll have a 6mm with 100 grain Nosler's and a 300 weatherby for the big hogs if I see one. May even tote the 222 along for bobcats and coyotes.
19 October 2002, 07:25
W. WilsonBlack powder comes first, then I will try to get a deer with my new Competitor pistol in 300 Weatherby until later in the season. Then out comes old tried and true--lefty 257 Weatherby MK V. It has taken about thirty whitetail since I got it in '81. I might switch to the 340 at the end. Nice to have choices.

CustomstoxBRNO model 22, 1954 manufacture date, in 7 X 57. I stocked this rifle earlier this year and took it to Africa in June. It came to me as a barreled action and I did not change it. In fact it was completely unmarked and the bluing looked perfect. I often wondered if it was ever fired as the bore was perfectly clean. It has a 2.5 to 8 Leupold Vari X III on Melani QD rings. It shoots 150 grain Nosler Partitions very well.

. I use solid-copper X-type bullets witch shoot very well from this gun. I try to use only 120 gr as it is only used for deer and I feel good out to 300 yards. The charge I use is changing this year but I'm going for a constant 2200fps at 200 yrds.

triggerI'm going to try something diferent this year.
I have several guns that I have never hunted with. Going to use them this year. Don't care if I come home empty handed.
T/C Hawkens 50 Cal. Tang peep site, 370 grain T/C maxi and 90 Grains of FFg - Built from a kit in 1978.
Parker Hale bolt action, 243 Win, Leupold 1-5, 100 grain Nosler Partition handload. Tired of hearing folks say a 243 will not kill a deer -going to find out for myself.
The 338 Hawk, 30-06, 270 and 308 get to stay home this year.
19 October 2002, 09:58
<Ranger Dave>In the morning I'm hunting with my Win M70 30-06.
The afternoons I will hunt with my Win M94 30-30.
It is up to the deer to decide which round he wants to die with. I'm not a dictator!

<MachV>Here in S Mn the only choice used to be Smoothbore shotgun slugs, real ify in the old days.
But times have changed & equipment too.We can now use pistols!TC & others make some impressive units to harvest deer.Rifled slug barrels are becoming more popular & accurate as well.
So to answer your ?,my rifle of choice will probibly not be a rifle at all but a TC Ancore with a 15" 708 or 454Casual as one of my nephews will be useing my trusty rifle barreled 1300Win 12Ga=CJ

jrslateI used my Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk III* with a 21" barrel and 1.5x-5x Simmons scope. 174 gr. Hornady RN Interlocks over 44.0 gr. of AA2520 with a Fed.210 primer. This load clocks 2280 fps from the 21" barrel and 2518 fps from the 25.2" barrel.
The results were as expected...one shot, one deer, very little meat damage.
