What Animals cant you/wouldnt you hunt with a 30/06 and a premium bullet like a 180 grain Nosler Partition.

Elephant, buffalo, hippo, bison and lion. Good to go with anything else on license I think.

I think i'd want a 220 for the major bears and largest moose. short of that everything else in NA would be fair game, forgive the pun.

Here in North America? I wouldn't use it for a field mouse, fruit fly, etc but pretty much anything bigger than a rabbit and you're good to go.

When I was young (I'm 78)there used to be an occasional running argument between Jack O"Connor who contributed to Outdoor Life (he may have been Gun Editor, I just don't remember, but he was a prominent gun authority at the time) and Warren Page, Gun Editor of Field & Stream. The argument? Whether the 270 (advocated by Jack O' Connor)was as good as the 30-06 for use on brown bears. Shows how times have changed. (BTW, I have a dim recollection that there was a 225 gr. bullet for the '06 in those days -over 55 years ago) As`a lifelong lover of the 06 I would advocate it as the supreme "all around" cartridge (if there is such a thing)Moderate recoil, deadly accuracy and the ability to "reach out" in my humble opinion makes it a truly great cartridge. I used a 375 H&H in Africa on a Cape buff and, of course, would not recommend making the 06 work beyond what it can handle - but if it happened to be the only rifle in my hands at the time of arrival of "the hour of truth" as the Spaniards say, I would like it over any other. (Elephants and lions have been shot with the 7x57 and the 30-06 certainly exceeds that also great cartridge. No, of course, I'm not saying to use it in Africa on DG, I'm just being very enthusiastic about a great cartridge.

Given a choice, I would not pick it as a gun to hunt Brown Bear. If it was all I had, I would just make do. Other than that, it is a capable round.

I have used 30-06 on 4 different continents. I have found that it works on a variety of game. That said, my two favorite guns are the '06 and my 375 H&H. Those are my "go-to" guns.

The Spotted Owl. 06 is to loud and atracts PETA jerk offs.

Ruffed Grouse. I can't hit them with a shotgun.

If that was the only gun I had and was limited to that and all the hunting was paid for. There is nothing I wouldn't hunt with it.

If there was other choices I would rather have something better for somethings.

As far as grouse are concerned I have eaten a few shot with a 06. One just has to make sure you head shoot them.

Very little... It'll drop everything on the planet with the correct shot placement. I'd be leary about stuff that'll kill you, but I'd still try it.

It is a fine cartridge for any big game in the lower 48. I've used a 30-06 on critters from ground squirrels to elk and plan on deer and elk come fall this year. As stated above it will kill anything world wide just not always the best choice.

Though it's already been stated, there is pretty much nothing that it is not capable of killing. Also as stated I would prefer something more stout for bear and some African game but in general terms, it will take care of business. Mine will be my backup rifle on this years elk hunt. The primary is more then is needed by a long shot but the 338-378 Wby will also get it done.

the 06 is all I'll ever need.Ive had well over 100 rifles,recently decided to not have so many around i dont use.I decided to just keep my charles daly 98 mauser,and have at it.

The thing about the 30-06 is it it is a very potent killer w/the right bullet.But the other great thing is due to its light recoil most folks can shoot it very accuratley,when it comes to placing killing shots.w/regards

I used the 30-06 with 180g bullets on the biggest moose I've ever taken, (66" spread,) and an arctic grizzly. Works very well and I wouldn't think twice about doing it again.

Despite all the nay-sayers who claim that the newer "premium" bullets are just gimmicks, I firmly believe that such bullets as the TSX have made the handloaded .30-06 a MUCH improved cartridge over the '06 of twenty years ago.(I don't buy factory ammo, ever.)

I can confidently use a 180 TSX in my '06 with the knowledge that the RETAINED bullet weight after impact will be higher than that of my beloved Partition of the same weight, or even that of the 210 Partitions I used in the .338.

This is no small consideration! With the increased weight retention comes improved penetration, and although I'd still prefer my .338, .404 or .416 on bison and brownies, I would also be comfortable using the '06. I would NOT have said that 20 or 30 years ago.

The newer generation of premium bullets has given us a very valuable increase in the "suitability" of the older rounds for bigger game. I may be of retirement age, but I know an improvement when I see it. The .30-06 is better now than it's ever been before.

Ditto this only I'd replace bison with Costal Brown Bear. My American Buffalo (bison) fell to one 435 gr T/C Maxi-Hunter from my .54 cal Green River Hawken rifle, so I wouldn't hesitate to use a .30-06 on one.

The old .30-06 has been used to kill every animal on the planet, although it wouldn't be my first choice. However, my .375 RUM...

Assuming we have a rim fire available as well as a shotgun to handle the small game chores and assuming we have bullets to suit the task and it was legal.....there's nothing on the planet I wouldn't use a .30-06 to hunt.

For anything from 100 pound pronghorns to 1500 pound eland it's a fine choice.....rangy and powerful!

Few other cartridges are as worthy but I rate the .280 Remington and the .338-06 as highly!

Would saying that I would not hunt anything with a 30-06, be considered wrong???????

I personally would add the great bear to this list ... and Rhino as well (but could never afford several of those!). Would prefer other calibers for many things, but the 30-06 is very serviceable for most species.
