<Swift Shot>270 win, 30-06
I have been searching reloading data. It looks like the 270 with a 130 grain has more energy beyond 200 yards than a 30-06 with 150 grain. I am looking for a T/C encore all around larger north american game round and was going to go with the 30-06 however this info is very intresting. I am wondering because this is factory ammo can this be over come with hand loads and second considering that the 270 kicks much less what are your opions for it as a larger game round.
1. Game most likely hunted include
elk (roosevelt)
black bear
caribou
mule deer
whitetail deer
2. tc encore barrel length will be 24-26 inches

<JonMudskiper>I think you should try to look at rounds which are out of the Encore. Comparing rounds shot out of rifle is different because of barrel length. Some cartridges will loose less power out of a short barrel than others.

p dog shooterThe 06 will give you better prformance with heavy bullets then the 270 like 165 and above. I do dought that for most shots you could tell what shot what.

<MontanaMarine>Either choice of cartridge will do fine on the game you intend to hunt.
Personally I would be thinking 150gr bullet in the .270 or 165/180gr in the 06.
If recoil is a major consideration for you, the .270 launching a 130 gr Barnes XLC at max velocity may be a combination for serious consideration.

TailgunnerMr Mudskipper He's talking about a Encore rifle (same frame, but with a full (24-26 inch) length barrel and butt stock)
Personaly I'd go with the 30-06 round, but in reality theirs not much difference between the 27-06, 7mm-06 and the 30-06.
I have owned a .270 & a 30/06 & I like the 30/06 better. But reality is there is probably bugger all difference.

StonecreekI would be happy with either for most of the game you list, but if you are intending to hunt elk regularly, I would favor the '06 with something like 180 grain Nosler Partitions over the .270.

500grainsI like the '06 with 220 grain loads, when penetration is the issue (elk).
Otherwise, I don't think it matters, except that sporting goods stores have sales on '06 ammo more often than they have sales on 270 ammo.

Mark GWell it seems we think a like. I have a T/C Encore. Mine is a .270win with a 26" standard taper barrel (from the T/C Custom shop). This is my Deer, antelope, caribo, gun. I am looking at another barrel for Elk, Moose, and Bear. That's is what is cool about the Encore is you can get the specialty barrels. I haven't settled on a larger caliber yet, but I can tell you "once you get above .270 in the Encore it is best to go with a Heavy Barrel(HB) configuration. (Yes even for the -06 with 180gr loads.) I had a .300win 26" heavy barrel that was just under MOA. Still kicking myself for trading it for a .260 rem I that I only kept for 4 months. My next barrel will be a 23" Heavy barrel in either .338-06, 35whelen, .338win, or another .300win but with a 24" HB.
Ps. dont buy the factory barrels go to
http://www.foxridgeoutfitters.comthis is T/C's custom shop, you can have barrels made for a very few dollars more, and they are good shooters.

AtkinsonEither one will do, but I would prefer the 30-06 for the larger animals such as elk, because it leaves a better blood trail most of the time...

WstrnhuntrThere are some very good reasons for selecting the 270 over an 06 but energy at range is not one of them. Id say get the 270 then save up for a larger bore on the larger game like a 35 whelen, the two make a nice pair.
