I know everything in Texas is bigger, but that looks like a fat bobcat!

Kamo GariDefinitely a cougar. It just has pointy ears and lost its tail somewhere along the way...

My God, do *any* of these media types do any sort of fact checking anymore?

I guess not Kamo! I had a good laugh over it!

Kyler HamannPeople tend to pick the most glamorous animal in the area to name when they spot anything.
Over my years of guiding I'm not even surprised anymore when my hunters think most everything that moves is a "MOUNTAIN LION". Someone yells that out for about 25% of the does we see, 30-40% of the coyotes we see, and probably 50-60% of the bobcats we see. Nobody wants to see an "average" animal.
I even had someone yell "mountain lion" for a BLACK house cat that crossed the road in front of us... in broad daylight... IN TOWN!
Why would the media be any different. At least in a truckload of hunters they get laughed at so they try not to make that mistake again. There is no real mechanism in place to ever call the media on these mistakes so why should they bother checking if they're right?

Bobby TomekI clicked on the link, and it said "video unavailable." Will try again later.
But yes, I agree: most sightings are nothing more than the product of an active imagination and a less-than-complete understanding of the physical features of the animal they think they have seen.

MACBobcat, not a cougar.
That's why city folk need to stay in the city. They show their ignorance way too often when they come anywhere near a rural area.

philny1At the begining of the video where the pic was well focused it is called a bobcat. I most definitely agree. She says bobcats frequent the area.
The second putty cat is out of focus, this one is referred to as a mountain lion. Might be.
Here where I live in NY we have bears and bobcats, no lions, tigers either.

Skinner. That's most definitely a bobcat, I've been trapping, calling and shooting them for 35 years so I knows one when I sees one.
Personally I don't mind people freaking out about predators and am of the opinion now that having a few folks get eaten is a good thing in the long term.
Matter of fact there's a few people I'd like to see get eaten, starting with the people who put the initiatives on the ballot that restricted our management options and tools on mountain lions, coyotes, etc.
