Factory Loads for M1 Garand/Boar Hunting?
I'm looking for suggestions WRT factory loads suitable for use in an M1 Garand to use on California wild boar.

As far as the gun is concerned, I'd like to keep the bullet weight under 165 grains, if possible, and I can't use any "light magnum"-type loads, as the port pressure is too high with such loads. The op-rod can be bent by using loads with excessive (by M1 standards) port pressure.

As far as the pigs are concerned, I suppose it would be best if the round is built around something like a Barnes X-bullet or Trophy Bonded, etc.

I always had my best luck out of the Garand with 150 grain Remington Cor-lock

I've used the Federal Premium with 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips on deer with good effect. They also tend to feed extremely well in the M1. What I am wondering is would such a bullet be appropriate for use on a meat pig, say 150 lbs or less?

Zippy the Ballistic Tip will work on a small "meat" pig, but might damage a lot of meat, and what if you run into a big bruiser. Try one of the Premium loads from Federal. I have had excellent results with the 165gr. Trophy Bonded Bearclaw in the 308WCF on wild pigs. You can never go wrong with a Nosler Partition, I like some kind of bullet that will hold together in case I run accross a boar 250 lbs or better with a gristle plate. Just do not use the Federal High Energy loads in your Garand.
Last pig I shot a couple of weeks ago was a 325 pound boar [weighed], and had a 2" thick gristle plate. He was/is excellent eating by the way.

I did some surfing here and there in search of an answer... how about the Winchester fail safe 165 grain or the Winchester Supreme Partition Gold 150 grain?

I've never used either of these and know nothing of them.

Either one of those should work fine. If you have never killed a pig, just skin and butcher it just like a deer. The meat is great.

I agree with Dave James- on hogs of any size- with a 30.06(M-1 Garand) it's real hard to beat a plain ole Remington CoreLok in any of the 3 popular weights- 150, 165 or 180grn.
