john c.snake chaps
or whatever the hell you call them. whitetail season in south texas is a comin on and the rattlesnakes are out in force during that time a year. every year seems like we get a close call or 2. last year we were dragging a deer in the dark back to camp w/just some headband lamps for lite and we dam near stepped on a 5 footer crossing the trail in front of us. it was close. anyways this year i want to get us the chaps(?) that strap on your shins to deflect bites. anyone ever used em? any opinions on em? where to get em? thanks

Biggs300I used them this time last year on a depredation hunt in SW OK and a couple of times on early season bow hunts there and in the TX Panhandle. They are called Snake Gaiters and there are several companies that make them. My gaiters are from Whitewater Outdoors. I assume they work although I've never had an opportunity to test them.

Bama15Academy Sports has them for $35. Have not used them but have used the chaps but they are very hot and stiff. I am going to pick up the shin quards this week.

aliveinccI have not worn the gaiters, but have worn the chaps, muy caliente .
I wear snake boots. Chippeawa's work for me. I don't go anywhere on the ranch without them.

R FlowersI wear the ones sold by Cabelas that are called Turtle Skins. They are light and not hot to wear. I have another brand that I bought but they are pretty stiff and warm. The Turtle skins are soft and pliable, easy to put on.

john c.never even considered that it'd be hot wearing em, cause i never wore any. we'd only have em on walking to and from the stands, maybe 15 minutes each way. i live on the nueces river near corpus and i see snakes around the place all the time so probably should have some for that too.

larrysMy problem is more wet land and we have water moccasins so I bought a pair that fit like mud boots but have a wrap around snake layer that buckles. I don't remember the brand right now, but they work. Unfortunately been tested.

Brush CountryI recommend snake boots like Chippewa. Chaps are very hot and difficult to get on/off over boots. The snake boots run around $200. Get used to wearing them daily or just close your eyes and don't worry about the snakes.

Justins for me.
Work good against low cactus and brush too.

Ryan CampbellJust as a side note.
Proper pronunciation of C-H-A-P-S is actually with the SHHH sound not the CHA sound.
Ralph Lauren screwed that up years ago.

Ryan CampbellJohn,
You are correct sir. I had to borrow from Robert Earl Keen there.

Eland SlayerI HIGHLY recommend the Chippewa snake boots. I've worn Cabela's Pinnacle zipper snake boots for the last 7 years, and they were good...but the soles began to fall apart (understandable after 7 years of hard use). So a few weeks ago, I bought some Chippewas and they are WONDERFUL!! I wish I had bought some sooner. I've only worn them 3 or 4 times so far....and they already feel "broken in". Very comfortable....and I like the fact that they are taller than the Cabela's boots.
