just luckyHornady vs Hornady
What have you seen in the 30 cal 180 SST,s performance
compared to the 180 Interlock? Start at 3000fps and I am
talking bullet toughness here not accuracy.
Or- does the SST hold together better than the Interlock?
I have 32 African head taken with the 180 Interlock but my
gun has given up it's love of them. It holds em in well enough with the SST and I am off to hunt in a few weeks.
Thanks

4bambamThe 180 Interlock

is better for more weight retention than the SST. The 180 Hornady Interbond is out if you are looking for a bonded bullet.
www.midsouthshooterssupply.com$25.76 a hundred
and natchezss also, but you might have to call them-1-800-251-7839

Wstrnhuntr Think of the SST as an interlock with a hollow point, which is essentially what it is. It is going to give a rapid expansion, deliver more initial shock, and in a hyper velocity rifle it will shed its jacket faster than a standard interlock. A slightly heavier, thus slower, SST with a higher S/D should hold up about the same as an interlock. Especialy from the 06 and smaller variety of chamberings. An SST at magnum velocities is a good recepie for bullet failure.
One fact that a lot of people seem to overlook is that a bullet with a low SD will shed its core much sooner than one with a high sd simply because there is much more jacket that needs to be be crushed before seperation can occur.
In other words, a 180 grain 30 cal sst will hold up better than a 150 grain sst at the "same velocity".
With that said, I agree with the post above. Take some Interbonds on your safari.

tasunkawitkoi saw this on another forum - it may or may not apply to your situation, but it is refreshing to see such openness and honesty from a company......

I recently E-mailed Hornady, asking them "why no Interbond offerings in .308Win. ??" Here is the respones I recieved, wich I though was Honest and Informative. Thought I would share it with you guys in case you were wondering the same thing.

Part of the answer is because the 308 doesn't need an InterBond in order
to perform. Now having said that I have to qualify it. I fully realize
"need" has nothing to do with what customers want to buy but at some
point I think a reputable manufacturer has a responsibility to not take
advantage of the marketing being presented just to extract more money
from the customer. The InterBond was developed to address a specific set
of circumstance, namely, high velocity cartridges shooting lighter
weight bullets where it was almost impossible to make a bullet hold
together well enough to penetrate deeply enough. The 308 doesn't have
that problem. Velocities are relatively low, it is reasonably easy to
build bullets that Performa virtually flawlessly with out the
significant expense needed to build the bonded bullet. Additionally the
bonded bullet, because it is designed for some extreme performance
demands is necessarily tougher than can be depended upon to expand
reliably over the ranges the 308 will be used. Finally, I know we'll
have to do it anyway but since we can't keep up right now it just seems
we ought to put the emphasis on the mags until production can keep up.
