SKellyRe: 6.5 X 55 as a big game stopper.
Bobby,
I agree with you on the seemingly unusual killing characteristics of the 140gr. bullet from this cartridge. I've only owned mine for a couple of years, but i've managed to rack up some impressive kills with it since then. I've killed one elk, 5 deer , 4 antelope and a black bear all with a 140gr. Hornady @ 2800fps. All of the kills were one shot affairs that ended rather quickly... I'm impressed with the little bugger so far!

LeanwolfSpeaking of the .256 Mannlicher, the great Arctic explorer, Vilhjalmur Steffanson, mentions in his fine book, "Hunters of the Great North," that he "... killed many dozens of the white (Polar) bears..." with his .256 Mannlicher Gibbs, during his 16 years there.
He did not say what cartridge mfg. he used, but obviously it/they would have been factory rounds of the times, between 1906 and 1918. Steffannson seemed to think the .256 Mann., was quite sufficient for "serious" work.
