Looking at elk hunting in Unit 61 in Colorado - need info.
I was wondering if anyone has hunted unit 61 in Colorado for elk and mule deer
We have enough points built up now and are looking at going this coming year (09).
Any good outfitters anyone can reccommend?

Thanks,

I took a 355 Bull there in 2004.
I can't help with an outfitter because I have no experience with any, I pretty much do it on my own.
You are welcome to PM me for any particulars on the area I might be able to help with. Where I hunted I did not see a single other hunter on my trip.
Here are a couple pictures of my Bull if you are interested.

Nice bull.............congrats.

Know anything about unit 76 or 40?

Hunt codes. I thought i had them figured out, but ..........what's the diff. between
EE, EF and EM (EM07601R) on the hunt codes?
Example above - does that mean - male only, unit 76, 1st rifle season?

How can someone tell by the code if it's mainly private or public land?

Thanks,

I don't have any first hand experience with these guys, but I believe they have been around awhile. They have a lodge on the dividing line between 61 & 62 that I have passed many times.

I don't shoot elk at 600 yards for the same reasons I don't shoot ducks on the water, or turkeys from their roosts. If this confuses you then you're not welcome in my hunting camp.

The hunt codes prefix EE,EF,EM denotes Elk either sex, Elk female, Elk male.
Yes that example you cited means exactly that Elk male, unit 76, 1st rifle.
You can't tell from the hunt codes if the unit is made up of private or public land unless it is a private land only hunt then the hunt code says so.
Unit 76 I have no real experience with, have had friends hunt it and hear that it is best to use horses and get way back in, and unit 40 I only know about ranch hunts in that unit I have no info on public land hunting there.
Wish I had more for you.

Thanks to both for the info.

Not looking as easy as i thought for drawing 61 this year.
I talked to an outfitter tonight and he said that 34 non-res tags were issued last year and 17 people with 12 points drew and 13 people did not. I assume the other 4 went to people who had more than 12.

How many points do you and your partners have?

Maybe I can help you out with some legwork on the stats and give you some options on what you might draw depending on your points.
Let me know I'd be happy to help a bit.
