State Preference Points

Which western states can I purchase preference points for future hunts without having to purchase an annual license to purchase the points?

I believe AZ requires you to purchase an annual hunting license to have an opportunity to purchase points?

I only apply in a handful of states but in my mind the requirement to purchase a license is just one part of the big picture.

Some states, like Wyoming, don't require a license but make up for it by charging a bundle for points($100? for a sheep point).

Some states, like Utah, require you to buy a license but sell the points for little money($10 a point).

Other states, such as Colorado, require you to buy the license($1,000+ for deer and elk) then refund your money if you don't draw(minus a small fee).

To some extent this all balances out in the end, IMO.

As with anything check the most up to date regs.

From the information I have, only Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana do not require the purchase of the hunting license, but some nominal ($10) conservation fee or some such. All the others require the license which ranges from $85 to $160 ish. Might be slightly outdated info since we are going into a new year.

I would rather pay $100 for a sheep point, than $150 for the license and stil don't have any points yet, but that is just me.

JBrown covers it for the most part. If you just want points for one animal, it is cheaper. If you want points for multiple animals in multiple states, it costs about the same for each state.

In AZ you must buy a license and also pay a $13 application fee PER SPECIES to get a bonus point, which is different from a preference point.

But at least one state will sell you a license for $65 and a sheep point for $10. Just saying.......
