Buttstock Cartridge Holder

Never had one before and thinking about using one holding 6 rounds approx. Want something tough, no-nonsense, time proven, straightforward to attach and that doesn't interfere with cheek placement on the buttstock. Prefer one without additional pouch/es. Would appreciate any recommendations from guys who use these. Cheers.

impala#03Murray Custom Leather makes the best one I have used. I have them on three Ruger #1's. The elastic ones I have used don't keep their shape very well, and slide around the stock. The ones iI have used from Dick Murray are the ones with the elastic cartrige holders. Heavy duty stuff.

talentrecThe cheap elastic ones work just fine with a small modification. Cut a small hole towards the back and put your rear swivel stud through it. That way it won't slide around.

farbedoI use a cheap Bob Allen elastic band one with a simple flap over the cartridges. Never had an issue with it.

gunslinger55Ordered one from murray as I was getting a .505 belt made. Wow that thing is very impressive. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. The stretched rawhide lacing sucks up tight when dry and will never move. Makes my old elastic one look pretty crude

rnoviJust remember that it adds a fair bit of weight to the rifle. For a stalking rifle that I'll carry all day I prefer my spare cartridges on my belt. If I'm blind or still hunting then the buttstock holder works great.

GrenadierI've tried several including leather lace-up, neoprene with elastic loops, and leather with a Velcro secured flap. But my favorite is a cheap one made by Allen. It cost so little I thought I would try it out and just throw it away if I didn't like it. But I do like it and I have kept it and use it.
It has a little zippered pouch that sits flat when empty. I find the pouch good for carrying a couple of the little Rem-Oil packets, a couple of anti-fog wipes (don't mix these up with the Rem-Oil!), chapstick (it melts in your pocket), and a cravat (military bandanna with a safety pin). But you could put just about anything you want in there. It has straps that you adjust on the back to fit your rifle. Then you put the straps through some keepers and cinch them up. Cinch it up really tight then after a few days cinch it up again and it stays put. You can find them several places on the internet for $10-$16.

I no longer use this sleeve since I re-stocked the rifle, but it did work well to hold it still in this configuration.

Brownells used to stock them for about $50.

mlfgunsMy hunting partner had the nylon Allen type. Two years ago while dragging a deer downhill for about a half mile he reached the bottom then began to hear wolfs all around him making the hair stand on the back of his neck. He quickly loaded his rifle from the magazine only to discover 7 rounds missing from the flexible holster. Not a good feeling. If you use the type similar to the one displayed above within a zippered pouch, for varmint shooting from a fixed position, then they are ok.
Personally I favor an enclosed leather pouch on my belt/front torso.

1. The exposed shiny brass is a mirror that will give away your position.
2. Bullet tip deformation from being unprotected when contacting anything that is hard, ruining accuracy.
3. The sun heating up the exposed brass, spiking the pressure which will cause a different flight path than what the rifle is sighted in for.
Also increasing the odds of case stickings.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.
What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
