I am going Caribou hunting this September. I am wondering if anyone has a good recipee for my .270win (bullet/propellant). Ranges will be 150 to 300 yards.

YukonerGBF,
What type of caribou? Mountain? Barrenground?
Mountain caribou are considerable larger. All caribou go down pretty easily. Anything out fo a 270 from a 130gr.-150gr. will be effective.

GBFThank you Daryl.
The animal in question is an icelandic Reindeer (lat. Rangifer tarandus). I do not know the difference between ours and yours to be honest. But its habitat is mainly barren woodless highlands.

Rich AndersonI would pair it up with a good 130 to 150 gr bullet on the order on Nosler Partition ,Swift A Frame, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw etc and H4831. Jack O'Connors 270 load works well for me. Cosult several manuals or check this forums favorite loads. That should give you a starting point.

Russell E. TaylorJust find a "book" load, with a good hunting bullet, that works well in your rifle. You can pretty much kill caribou with a slingshot. Just make your shot count; try not to gut-shoot them at 30 yards like a "former" hunting colleague did... which is why he's now "former."

StonecreekIt's my impression that the Scandanavian Reindeer is a bit smaller than the North American variety. Regardless, whatever bullet shoots well in your .270 should be adequate. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on a "super premium" bullet; any Hornady, Speer, etc. will do (although Nosler Partitions are not unreasonably expensive and are virtually never known to fail).
