<Don Krakenberger>NEED HELP re Unit 62 in Colorado
I have a VERY GOOD FRIEND that wants to switch to this unit for a hunt this fall. He got a cow permit for this area. He is interested in an area call the "Uncompadre Forest". Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help him get a "head start" and talk to him about experiences in this area. Thanks much for any help. Don Krakenberger

<257 AI>You didn't say which season he's hunting but if its a rifle season he should be prepared to have lots of company! Unit 62 gives out alot of tags and the success rate isn't what you would call spectacular, being under 20% for the year 2000. His best bet this year is to find the secluded areas that offer protection from the heat and easy access to water. If he wants an elk he's going to have to work harder and be smarter than about 2000 other guys that are out there too. If possible get out here a couple of days before season to scout the area. I'm not saying that it can't be done, but he's got his work cut out for him. I hope he's got his topo maps out and has been studying them, also call the DOW office in Glenwood Springs and pick their brains and get some info. Call them, not the office in Denver. Good luck!
