Big Antelope in Colorado

AtkinsonBig Antelope in Colorado
This year while hunting elk just out of Walsenburg Colorado, I saw some of the largest Antelope bucks Ive seen in years, a couple boarding on 18 inches and width like the palm of my hand and a couple more around 16 to 17 inches. They were pretty tame as they had not been hunted for a year when I was there....88,000 acre Ranch owned by Ross McKenna. Ross has a big lodge in town and the ranch begins at the Walsenburg City Limits. Not sure what Ross charges for Antelope hunts, but If I were inclined to hunt Antelope, which Im not, Id give him a call.

georgeldAssume that's going down the dirt road between town and the bridge on the south end. I've hunted the place 10mi south of the turn off. Vining Ranch.
Beautiful country, damned dry though. Fire burned just to the west of the place I hunted.
I usually hunt goats due east of Pueblo on the edge of Crowley county, get some nice sized one's down there too. Haven't gone in 4 yrs now due to being sick. Hopefully I'll be in shape to go again next year. Almost am this year but, want to give this belly a chance to heal better. Wrestling game can strain a gut, and if it's not fully healed up might blow another hole in it.

TommyIIBoth these came from CO. The first one I took in 2014 (note the 3rd horn on the bridge of the nose) and the second one my brother took in 2015.
The biggest problem with pronghorn hunting in CO is they are kind of stingy with the tags. Takes quite a few preference points to draw for a good public lands unit and both these bucks came off public land.

georgeldHey, if being stingy with tags allows hunting to continue for many more years. That's a damned good reason isn't it?
Sell more tags than animals and get it over with and then cry in your soup because there's no more antelope to hunt. Which would you rather have????????
Nice goats by the way.

AtkinsonGeorgegeld,
It on both sides of the road as you go out of town on hiway 10, few farms right at first as you go under the Interstated and the rest is his 88,000 private land ranch..His lodge is the old Odd Fellows Lodge, or something like that in Town..
Walsenburg used to be a clean pretty town, now with the influx of medical marijuana, the closing of the movie theatre and some businesses and the opening of 3 pot shops and drug dealers on every corner, its gone to hell in a gummybear basket!

crsheltonRay,
When hunting elk southeast of Colorado City in recent years, every time we drove from I25 to the ranch, we drove through herds of pronghorn.
Naturally, we had only bear and elk tags, but it was nice to see so many pronghorn.
