600 Nitro Express...go figure!

Since I probably won't ever get off the N.American Continent, I think, no I know I have all the bases covered for critters here; .223, .243, 25-06, 270(Yes!) and 7mmRem Mag. Real interesting reading on this thread and some funny stuff too. But likes and dislikes are fun to discuss based on personal touchy feeling stuff, but to condem one, especially if you never owned one is beyond me. Yes, I have shot the 600 NEx..never again. Got one bad rotater cuff, not on my shooting shoulder, don't need nother one. Keep it up boys, your a doing just fine.

Since we are all sitting around the campfire beating our gums, here's my thoughts on this subject.

I'll put my vote with the guys who think the Weatherby line-up sucks. As someone once said, Roy Weatherby doesn't know his butt from a hole in the ground about firearms. Weatherby's specialty is purely marketing hype. His technique is simply to stick some ridiculously large case behind every bullet available and make a lot of wild claims for it and the gullable public eats it up. The truth is the Weatherby line-ups real claim to fame should be the most inefficient, over-bore capacity, barrel eating cartridges on the planet. I've seen a several Weatherby rifles with severe cases of throat erosion and accuracy in the toilet in less than 1,000 rds! Pouring an extra 20-30 grains of powder down a barrel just to try to squeek out an extra 100 or so feet per second don't make since to this old goat and for sure I've never seen it make any difference in the field hunting!

As for some of the other comments, I used to be a .270 hater until I got one. It's very effective and one of the easiest rifles to shoot well I've ever owned. Ditto for the .308. Sure an /06 will out perform it and I love an /06 but with my shoulder problems I appreciate a little less recoil.

I've owned and been around a world of .243s all my life and have NEVER seen one in anyone's hands live up to half the claims for this round.

And I've made my share of 30/30 jokes, but I've also been around enough to know that within their range and used properly, they work as well as anything out there. Hating a 30/30 is like hating your dog because you can't saddle and ride him. It's time we gave this poor old cartridge a little respect. It's low and slow and a lot of other things including obselete as hell, but it's sure fed and protected scads of folk in its time...and still does.

Finally, I think a lot of the bad feelings some of us have for certain cartridges may really be our own fault because we used the wrong bullet for the job. Poor bullet choice is one of the fastest ways I know to disappointing results. I dare say if we changed bullets and put more thought in our selection for the game at hand, many of us might change our votes here.

(The preceeding opinion and .50 cents will entitle you to a cup of coffee in most cheap restaurants across the land.)

308 Winchester. I've shot thousands of rounds of the stuff in matches and it is very accurate. For absolutely no good reason I still hate it! I wouldn't take one hunting if you gave it to me. Makes no sense and is completely irrational but there it is.

While I'm at it I'll throw in the .243 Winchester. I've owned three and guess the caliber is good for something but I've yet to figure out what. It's too much for some things and not near enough for everything else.

Hey SlipKnot, this isn't gun related, I just wanted to know where you got your name? Is it the band or just the knot?

I'd have to go along with the 270 crowd. Just don't care for it. No rational reason. I guess the 30-06 and 6.5-06AI do more for me.

Ray Atkinson, why don't the pictures on your web site come up?

FarRight...Lost my brother 3years ago. Best hunting pard and buddy I ever had. We both owned horses, but he always wanted a mule (me too). He always said if he ever got around to getting one he was gonna name it SLIPKNOT. Good name for a mule, dontchathink. So I guess it's kinda in memory of my brother..miss him and all our trips and what they all stood for.
He was a helluva outdoorsman for sure. I have to tell this...folks that knew us were aware of all the time we spent in the woods and some asked if we ever got lost (we weren't know for staying much on the trail) and he'd always reply.."nope, can't say as we ever got lost...got turned around for a day or two..but naw, never lost".
So there you have it.

I admire them all, but if had to keep just two and can the rest, the survivors would be.....

Can't stand the .460 Wby. No reason for all that power. If you can shoot, a .416 is plenty for anything that walks.

I hate the 30-06. It is way too practical way too versatile. If I owned a 30-06 I would not need all the other rifles I had.

30-06 cause everyone seems to think it is the be all end all and everyone seems to have one except me and I plan to keep it that way!

I'll agree with the 30-06 as I too feel it is grossly overrated.

I truly don't know of a cartridge I don't like, there are quite a few I don't have any use for. I have had far more rifles that I didn't like, it wasn't the cartridge. In praticular the 77/22 Hornet. I truly love the 22 Hornet round but that rifle sucks.
If do have several cartridges that are my favorites.

1. 308 Win.
2. 222 Rem.
3. 223 Rem.
4. 300 WSM
5. 260 Rem.
6. 6.5 X 284

Depending on the day which is my favorite. I guess if it burns powder I like it!

The one cartridge that I hate. That would have to be the 30-06. I would dream of which cartridge I would like to take on different hunts as a child, a young adult, and even now.

If I owned that one damn cartridge I wouldn't of had to dream and buy all the other cartridges, Just immagine, only one chambering. The thought is repulsive.

I HATEE THE 06
