Best beer in the world
As I have gotten older, I have realized beer is the reason rum was distilled. I'll choose rum over beer any day , any time, but I will say the best beer I ever had was Belgium Duval.

Hard liquor over pints in a pub with one's mates? Surely you jest.

Who here has had Windhoek? I have been trying to find a distributor in the U.S. for quite some time.

My diabetic regimen doesn't allow for beer, so I can remember what I used to like - Guinness Extra Stout, Rogue Shakespeare Stout and Rogue Kells Irish Lager. I drink it in my dreams all of the time, seriously! LOL.
I am allowed no more than four ounces of certain liquors at a time. I've become partial to tequila, especially Don Julio Anjeo. I also like Jamison's on the rocks.
I've found that since I can only have a little, I like it to be as strong as possible since I want to make sure that I'm tasting alcohol and not some fruity drink.

Windhoek is light and refreshing. I like Taefl (sp?) in Namibia as well.

Trying to find it in the US and I am thus far unsuccessful.

The best beers IMO come from the micro/craft brewers. They seem to be more concerned with quality than quantity or international distribution. Indeed, part of what makes good beer good is correct storage. Examples of incorrect storage include high or room temperature, sunlight, and long-term storage, all of which are characteristics of beer transported across continents or states. It makes me sick to walk into a beverage shop and find stacks of beer in the middle of the floor in 90 degree temps.

Then there's the recipe aspect. National brands are made to a price point with adjuncts added to reduce cost and maximize production yield. One of the most prevalent adjunct ingredients is rice. Rice is cheaper than barley, higher in carbohydrates, and makes more alcohol, and it tastes nasty in beer. I can no longer stand to drink that stuff, even if its free. Last year we attended a nice outdoor wedding with a big tent, decent DJ, and kegs of national brand beer. The first sip almost made me hurl. We left and I bought a sixer of good beer on the way home.

Michigan is blessed with many good microbreweries. A few of my favorite beers come from Founder's Brewing, Bell's Brewing, and New Holland Brewing Co. To people who appreciate good beer it is impossible to pick a single best beer. Some of my favorite standbys include:

Dry Hopped Pale Ale - Founders
Breakfast Stout - Founders
KBS - Founders
Red's Rye - Founder's
The Poet - New Holland
Kalamazoo Stout - Bell's
WTF - Lagunita's (if its fresh and on tap)
Cascade Pale Ale - Steven's Point
5 Day IPA - O'Fallon

By the way, Founders released this year's KBS a couple weeks ago. Over a thousand people waited in line all night long for a chance at one of only 315 cases available. They limited it to 12 bottles per customer and over 300 pissed-off people went home empty handed. If you want to try it you can find a few bottles online for $20 per bottle. And you know what? It's worth it.

If anyone is passing through eastern iowa, check out the Millstream brewery in the Amana colonies, I don't think they make a bad brew, but Windmill Wheat is my first choice of the best beer I have ever tried, period
