I have used just one 30 caliber 180gr at 2700+ on a small deer at 28 paces,blew a fist sized hole out the otherside of the rib-cage.Has anyone used the .338 225gr at 2800 or the 129 and 140 6.5mm at 3000+ ?

I have taken some game with the 139gr. SST's in my 7mm-08. I shot three hogs, all 120 to 150lbs., at ranges from 128 yds. to 166 yds. All 3 were pass throughs. The two that I shot in the neck dropped in their tracks, and the one I shot in the shoulder ran 10 yards and dropped. The bullet took out the shoulder and the ribs on the opposite side. I have also shot one javelina that went down in its tracks and two blackbuck does on a cull hunt at a friends ranch with similar results. I plan on using this load on my pronghorn hunt next month.

I shoot a bit here in calgary with Rick.
I have loaded .270 130gr sst bullets to about 3100fps. They are excellently accurate, and perform well on deer sized game. Generally a small entracnce wound, with a 1-1.5" exit. Deer takes a few steps, falls over, kicks legs. Decent bullets, I prefer sciroccos. Or matchkings.

Scirocco's performed on game for you? I have
range tested them (only in one rifle) and had
some accuracy concerns with them. Enough of
my customers swear by them that I am sure they
are good though.

I have only killed two white tailed deer with them, but both shots were through heavy bone (if you can call anything on a whitetail heavy) They retained about 85% of their weight, and mushroomed beautifully. These were 150gr 7mm, from my 7X57 at about 2800fps. Both shots were at under 100 yards and the bullet was under the skin on the offside. I have re barrelled the action to 7-08, and again plan to shoot the scirocco. Im sold. From my experiance, they seem to reach peak accuracy at a little over max powder charge.

Ross, the SST is a good bullet but it is not a premium bullet it is basically a standard hornady interlock with a plastic tip very similar to the tips in a nosler ballistic tip. I have cross sectioned a few of each type and can tell no visable difference between them, except for the plastic tip there appears to be no difference, just a fashion statement. I may be wrong but im betting jacket thickness and hardness is no different. I am thinking the plastic tip acting as a wedge may cause it to open up faster than a standard interlock but I'm only guessing. I'm sticking with my favourite non premium bullet the plain old interlock.

I plan on trying the 165 grain SST in my 300
WSM this fall for black bear and whitetail.

During our hunt in South Africa this year my father used factory Hornady SST 30.06 ammo and made 7 consecutive one shot kills on impala, bushbuck, kudu, blue wildebeest, waterbuck, warthog and wildcat. Ranges varied from about 25 yards on the kudu to 125 yards for the wildebeest. Most of these animals are bigger than an average whitetail and usually much more difficult to anchor. The bullets held together very well and gave full penetration on all but the frontal shot on the wildebeest and a point of shoulder shot on the kudu.

I'd really like to get my hands on those 225 gr 338 SST's - they don't even show up on Hornady's web site - which by the way is in terrible need of updating. None of the suppliers I use have any in stock - anybody know where to get these - thanks

Any of those in the Midsouth Shooters Supply OEM bullet sale under plastic tipped bullets?
I really don't know, since I shoot cast bullets and Hornady 33 Winchester bullets out of my 338!

what bullets if any do you suggest to people who are luckey enough to purchase one of your rifles?

We generally do not reccommend any particular
bullet until we have test fired the rifle. The
intented primary use of the rifle (varmint, DGR,
etc.)also comes into play as well.

For most purposes the Partitions seem to work
well in our rifles displaying reasonable accuracy
and good terminal performance. The ballistic
tips while very accurate seem to be lacking
on game larger than medium sized deer.

I plan on giving the SST's a good workout this
fall on b. bears and mongo whitetail with a
300 WSM M15STS. Bears are on in 2 weeks......

I have some 180gr SSTs loaded in my 300Wby ammo, set to go on antelope hunt next week. I'll report on the performance when I return. I will say that these are more accurate in my rifle than a Ballistic Tip!
