Full article at the link
https://www.ammoland.com/2023/...bear-spray-computed/One of the most quoted and controversial figures used in the debate about how effective bear spray is “98%”. The figure is sprayed about (pun intended) promiscuously and irresponsibly. From thetrek.com, quoting Tom Smith:
Ninety-eight percent of people who used bear spray escaped injury (with 2% being knocked over but not killed) as opposed to only about 50% of people using guns.

Not that far from the truth.

Michael RobinsonInteresting and well-reasoned article.
As has been said, there are lies, damned lies, and statistics.
p dog shooter, you should write an article or paper on this subject.
Unlike most, you have marshaled the facts - not the usual BS, but the facts.
I for one would not waste time spraying an aggressive, charging, bear, unless it was with 10mm FN bullets in the vitals.
I had vigorous debates with our Yellowstone guides on this subject when we toured the national park last month.
I pretty much won when I asked them, what do you do with your spray if you're upwind of the charging bear?

AtkinsonBear spray at my casa is 6 fast fired shots from a big bore pistol or rifle, spray and pray with lead and copper, d rather pay the fine than be a stat...Its such a weak argument for the spray when you get down to the reality of the subject..

The only argument for spray is it does not kill the bear.

Michael RobinsonDon't want to kill the bear.
But really and truly don't want the bear to kill me!!!

p dog shooterThe desire to defend oneself and actually shooting the attacking bear.
Is far more important then the caliber and type of firearm used

craneAsk anyone who lives and works in bear country. Would wager that only a tiny fraction of that group opts for spray over lead. The upwind encounter being reason number one.

p dog shooterThe propaganda put forth by the pro spray pro animal.
Anti hunting/firearm anti-human crowd.
Was strong and many have been taken in by it.
Even hunters and pro-fire types brought into the swill. In the name of saving a few bears.
When it comes to stopping aggressive bears intent on doing you harm.
A good firearm has been and well be the best choice. For the foreseeable future.
