HAMILTON — A 24-year-old Washington state man has been sentenced for poaching a bighorn sheep and other animals in Montana in 2003.
Brent Mercado was given 30 days in jail and a three-year suspended sentence Thursday by District Judge James Haynes. Mercado also lost his hunting and fishing privileges for life in Montana and 30 other states.
Mercado and co-defendant Alan T. Sweet were charged in 2007 after Sweet's ex-wife contacted Washington authorities to report that the men had hunted illegally in Montana. She offered photos of Sweet holding a bighorn sheep head and other evidence.
Both men pleaded guilty to felony and misdemeanor poaching charges, but each blamed the other for pulling the trigger. Sweet has been sentenced to 90 days in jail and five years suspended.
