Group seeks to reintroduce Jaguars to US
I am sweating at the Gun Barrel drinking scotch and reading the paper.

Jackson paper states the Center for Biological Diversity has petitioned the US Fish and Wildlife to return Jaguars to the Gila.

Good grief.
This is the same group who mobilized to get wolves reintroduced.

Now they want coyotes declared threatened in southern NM and AZ to lessen the chance of someone accidentally shooting a grey wolf. It never ends.

Jaguar were never very common in the desert. Lions, yes, but not jaguar. Jaguar is more of a jungle animal.

For years they closed coyote shooting during deer season here in Wisconsin.

Because they didn't want to give deer hunters the excuse they thought a wolf was a yote.

Coyote shooting now is allowed again.

Anti's are always looking for an excuse to stop hunting.

I’d have no issue with reintroducing the jaguar to its native habitat, with a couple caveats.

Up front state the maximum population based on science.

Two, state that excess will be hunted.

Three set it up so that if the antis ban hunting they may be shot as introduced vermin with no appeal.

I think it would be neat to have them around, but if they are introduced it should be secondary to preexisting usage and animal populations. We’ve learned that the antis manipulate the system, so it should be preempted in a way that makes them not try.

That is just it. These are the people who started the reintroduction that in itself I was/am fine with.

The problem is on the details. This would be the wolf reintroduction only worse. How many elk and mule deer does a breeding population of Jaguars have to kill in the Gilia

Jaguar would be prioritized over existing animal concentrations.

The Feds would never state a max population density upfront. The jaguars would and still be on the Endangered Species protection. The fight to turn regulation to the state(s) after density was established (if ever) would be worse than the wolf.

My vote is no because of the details.

That's just it.....liberals don't care about the details as long as the words and ideas are warm and fuzzy. In one generation feelings have become more important than the economy, national defense, immigration, crime and so on.

Just look to Wis. the population goal is/was 350 wolves.

We exceeded it by 4 times if not more.

The anti's solution is to get rid of the number goal. So we don't have that excuse to have hunting season.

I'm all for letting the jaguar repopulate as much of its original range as possible, but this cat has never done well around significant human activity in the Southwest, so I suspect it would be self-limiting.
Same with the ocelot.

But when are they going to reintroduce grizzlies in Colorado?

While I think it’d be really neat to encounter a jaguar in the wild, I think we have already learned everything we need to know about how this would go from the wolf introduction disaster across the west.
