What's the latest? There are some good deals coming up so I assume they are still legal to hunt? Does anyone have any current information.

My contact is in Africa and I can't ask at the moment. I aked his brother a while back if they had been successful in getting rid of theirs and he said the pace had slowed down because they had five years to get rid of the herd? Maybe some one has specifics?

I had a successful hunt in late August at Indianhead Ranch in Texas for Scimitars. The management was quite aware of the current legal situation, and advised that getting one sooner than later would be wise. They also suggested that while doing any new CITES paperwork would be a hassle, it would not eliminate the ability to hunt them; it would just make it more administratively burdensome to do so.

I unfortunately do not have any additional information, or know of any 5 year limbo period.

I'd suggest contacting one of the exotic ranches and ask them directly. I will send IH an email and see if they have any new info. I'll post their response when I receive it.

I just went to an exotic auction last Friday and Charlie Seale (Executive Director of the Exotic Wildlife Association) spoke to everyone about the current issue. As of right now Scimitar Horned Oryx, Addax, and Dama Gazelle are still 100% legal to buy, sell, trade, and hunt.

The EWA has filed an official appeal to the court ruling. The appeal is seeking to get a new law passed, exempting U.S. captive specimens from the permitting process. This would apply to any exotic big game that is on the Endangered Species list.....including Red Lechwe, Barasingha, and Arabian Oryx which are already required to have CITES permits before being hunted.

There is some VERY good news.....the U.S. Wildlife & Fisheries Dept. and SCI have both joined in the fight and are backing the EWA in their appeal. Not only that, but huge donations are being made to the EWA's legal fund for fighting the idiots at "Friends of Animals" and HSUS.

Charlie says that he feels the ruling will ultimately end up in the Supreme Court, but for now things are okay. He said he's fairly confident they will win the court case. I hope he's right.

Also, the 5 year "limbo period" is not true.....just another piece of incorrect information floating around.

Thanks for the info. I am leaving tuesday for the valley to hunt one. I've never had the desire to hunt an exotic but am looking forward to take a crack at one.

Where are you going exactly? If you're going to the Yturria, I'm sure you'll get a great bull. I know the Yturria has a huge herd of Oryx (over 300 animals I believe).

I shot one last month as well ... just in case. A very nice old cow.

Sounds like the Yturria.....did you book with Wildlife Systems, Inc.? If so, I believe that's where they hunt most of their Oryx. I think that's the Punta del Monte division of the Yturria, but I could be mistaken.

It wasn't through them. I am going with a friend of mine so am a little light on the details. This should fill in just in case I don't do a last minute elk hunt this year.

Just make sure you write a hunt report and take plenty of pictures!!

Nice looking Oryx Sevens. What did she measure?

Thanks for the compliments guys. One shot with my 30-06 and 180 grain core-lokts put her down. She measured 36 1/8" on the longer horn.

Not that I'm an expert on Scimitar Oryx, but her light neck seemed very unusual. Our guess was she just got old and her hair grayed.

Eland is right on the appeal. According to Charlie, they can still be hunted/traded as usual. I was very cautious on making any statements until we knew for sure. The only questions is when the appeal will be ruled on.
