I have been thinking of buy a Browning bar light semi automatic in 30-06. For moose hunting....

I have a aimpoint 5000 and i think it should be the best sight for this kind of rifle.

And i have brown bears were i hunt and i think it would be the best rifle to stop a bear whit...

How many shoots would be possible to shoot in 5 seconds....?

What do you think guys.....?

Gee Whiz! I am glad I am not buying a semi auto Browning yet......just looking is all.
The one I saw had beautiful wood, a 338cal not to mention iron sights too. I would think this kind of action could come in handy while hunting in bear country or am I missing something hear?

Say was that 338 a lightweight? If so did it have a 20" or a 24" tube?

There is nothing wrong with hunting with a semi-auto. If you like it, buy it.

Just wondering has anybody here ever shot a BAR in .338 win? I have not but often wondered how it would shoot. Ie recoil, accuracy.
I do love 338's, and I think it would be wiser to worry about how well one could place the first shot, then to worry about how many you can get of in five seconds. Best make the first one a good one! Even big bears move really fast.

I've had a BAR in .338 for a lot of years and really like it. Although a bit on the heavy side, the recoil is just a push and I've never had a glitch with it feeding different types of ammunition. It'll shoot around 1 min. acc. all day but the only odd thing is that it shoots less then that with factory Remington corelocks and only those. I've got a Burris compact on her, I know I read all of the Burris horror stories on the Leupold thread, but I've only owned Burris for years. Great hunting outfit!

When I stated, in my previous post it was a bit on the heavy side, I wasn't referring to the recoil. I was referring to carrying her all day. She's a big girl. My other rifles are Rem. Mod. 7's. Quite a difference.

I have a 338 Bar Lightweight and prefer it to the various bolt action 338's that I have. It has a 20" barrel and I have a Leupold 1.5x5 VX III on it. It shoots 1 to 1.5"(which is as good as my old eyes do with any bolt action) groups with Federal Safari 250 grain Noslers and is comforting to carry in brown bear country which is everywhere I hike, hunt or recreate. Got it after a very close encounter with 3 adult bears that left me pretty shakey and the death of another hunter I knew whose bolt action had bear hair stuck in the tape on the muzzle and one shot fired. In those circumstances, working any bolt is way too slow.

Reminds me of that article about the Browning BAR rebarreled to 416 Taylor.

Mark I can't tell you if the length is 24 or 20, but it has the best looking stock on a gun I have seen in years. It compares in wood to some of the $3000 dollar shotguns I have seen at the gun dealers. I will measure that length and let you know OK.
Every Bar I have seen has a plain Jane piece of wood on them.....going to order a plastic stock for this jewel before hunting season gets hear.

Mark sorry it took so long to get back to you, but I have been caught up in work and honestly let it slip my mind.

The Browning Bar I did purchase has a 24 inch barrel with iron sight on it. I haven't seen a 20 inch BAR yet on the shelfs either. I will ask next time I am out OK.

Gracias-by the way they only made the 20" for one year.

this is a little off topic but....my father-in-law is still farming. He lets me hunt his land, feeds my whole crew on Sundays (every Sunday), keeps my freezer stocked with hamburger and steaks from his beef cows.
So anyways his shoulder really bother him and his BAR 7 mag is heavy and kicks a little. I went and bought him a .243 Lightweight BAR. Man that rifle has the most gorgeous fiddleback walnut butt and forearm....it's a dark reddish hue with the strong fiddleback striping and the glossy finish. He hasn't shot it....he keeps it in his bedroom in the box leaning up in the corner. Shows all his buddies. Well I went and traded him a 1.75x5 widefield Redfield scope for and old steel tube Weaver K4 he had, thinking he'd put it on the BAR and finally shoot it. Nope. Says he's gonna but she's still in the box. I guess he's happy with it anyway!LOL! That old guy shows the wisdom of age....I'll bowhunt and scout and hunt hard as heck.....he'll see where I"m hunting and turn his dogpack out in there and run a big buck out....and he'll kill him too! Last one was 15.5" wide 8 point scored 94 points. That rascal. Oh well it is his place. He's probably thinking all season," damned son-in-law gonna killmy buck if I don't do something quick!"
Hasn't happened to him yet!
