My brother and I are looking for a sheep hunt, and the draw opportunitys don't look great for rams. So we started looking at aoudad hunts, it seems like it would get us a close experience with less cost and waiting to get drawn. My question is where is the best aoudad hunting. We are both physically fit and have experience climbing above 14,000 feet. I hear new mexico and west texas has good population for them. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Lots of Texas Aoudad and places to hunt them.
One ranch I hunted a lot down near Hondo always had a few that would sleep in thick cover then bust out like a covey of quail. They were a darned nuisance as I never hunted them, but they were always there surprising me when they broke cover.

Rowdy McBride hunts Clayton Williams old ranch, I think $7500 big rams.

I hunted Tommy Lee Jones old ranch in February, the Baracho Peak. That ranch borders Williams ranch and is 500,000 acres. Both are between Alpine and Fort Stockton, and both have free range red sheep, Armenian mouflons, aoudad, elk and mule deer.

Just a good sized ram with a fun mountain hunt for around 4k

I second that on Clayton Williams ranch and Rowdy McBride. Killed 34" ram, no feeders there, fair chase.

If you want a real sheep hunt I would hunt Presidio, Jeff Davis, or Brewster Counties in the Trans Pecos region of west Texas. As far as I know there are no high fence operations in these counties, and there are several quality outfitters. Big private ranches, can be extremely rough, and big rams on the well run operations.

I was always under the impression aoudad were relatively hard to kill meaning they have great eyesight and are wary. Have talked to two separate hunters recently that said it's like shooting farm animals and the meat is lousy and they stink to boot. Which is it? I was itching to go to west tx to shoot one along with javelina but I'm not so sure now.

If you are looking for something that tastes good, go hunt an elk.

The 3 times that I have hunted aoudad, they have been very wary. These were free range hunts and I am not sure how "wary" they would be on a fenced concession.

I would go give it a try. I have hunted a lot of different Western game hunts over the past 33 or 34 years- deer, elk, bear, moose. The aoudad hunts are right up there with the others and I hope to hunt them again.

West Texas has lots of free range Aoudad. It's a lot like a desert bighorn hunt. They are big, seem pretty tough and can be hard to approach.

With only cattle fences, they can go wherever they want & it's totally fair-chase.

If I were shopping for a hunt, the outfitters and counties listed above are a great place to start looking.

High fence operations in other parts of the state would probably be a lot like any other high fence hunt.

They stink and the meat is horrible.

Beyond that they are a fun tough hunt in the mountains and nothing about them is easy.
