Barnes 6mm/ 115 grain Original On Elk?
I think Barnes has finally quit making this bullet.

However has anyone ever carried this bullet in the field and used it on Elk?

I was looking to load some up in a 6mm Remington with the idea of using it as a short range, brush round, say 100 yds tops.

I have nothing else to use the 2 boxes of 115 grains Barnes Originals on otherwise. And I'd hate to just give them away!

Minus all the " don't use 6mm anything on elk crowd; anyone had success or failures with this bullet?

The other thought was on Hogs.

Cheers and Good shooting

I have NEVER found Barnes originals to penetrate very well, with their dead soft cores and pure copper jackets. You ought to fire a couple into some wet newspaper, next to some common bullets just for grins.

How thick are the jackets on them, .032?

Wouldnt be hard to find a couple of better choices IMO.

Small Fry:

Thanks for the update. I will have to just retire the 2 boxes to either deer hunting or just save them, and who knows maybe some collector will be interested in them some day.

I am not a big Barnes user, but I had read a lot about the Barnes originals in Parker Ackley's books.

Don't know if you caught that report on the Alaskan forum about What is good for short range bear shooting, but there is reference to an interesting testing down by two rangers that was published for the Government guys to haul with them in the back country.

It compared penetration capabilities at about 15 ranges. Some interesting things surfaced. Like the 7 x 57 actually penetrated more with a 175 grain bullet than a 7 Mag did with a 175 grain bullet. The old 30/06 with a 220 grain Round Nose out penetrated the 300 Weatherby with the same bullet,
and the 30/06 with a 180 grain bullet out penetrated a 300 Win Mag with a 200 grain or 180 grain bullet.

Of course the Champ was a 458 Winchester, followed by the 460 Weatherby. Funny tho, they recommended also that a 200 grain bullet in a 338 Mag was superior for penetration than a 250 grain bullet.

It makes some interesting reading, if one can wade thru the governmental "baloney".

Check it out.

Velocity is usually a deterent to penetration w/ most expanding bullets. I would think if you have to hunt deer size game w/ a 6mm, these would be about perfect.
