Pa.FrankCaribou hunting & Outfitter questions
Hi guys,
I'm considering a Caribou hunt this year with an outfit called "High Arctic Adventures" Anyone out there ever use them? And Any advice on what to or not to bring on the trip? The hunt is in the Ungava Bay region and you go in by float plane so your limited to 70 pounds of gear.

Wendell ReichFrank,
Be careful in this area. I honestly do not know anything about this operation, bad or good.
A lot of these companies will run 800-1200 hunters a year through their camps. It is easy to fall through the cracks in this mass.
I work with a small company in Labrador. I believe Ann and Ray do to. He is top notch, good quality camps and service. I am going here in October to hunt Caribou and looking to fill a few more spaces, got five of us already who have paid our deposit. $3300 gets you the whole deal, licenses for two Caribou. Fly into Goose Bay and we take it from there.

<northwoodsman>You got to be careful with these high volume outfitters up there. I hunted the leaf river herd a few years ago with one of the "big boys" that does a lot of advertizing. I actually shot both animals the first morning I was there before I met my guide and fished the rest of the week. All in all a pretty good but two things I learned. (You guys may already know this) Hunting Caribu in the tundra is more like shooting dove than deer hunting. The animals are either moving through the area you are in or they are not. No matter how good a hunter you are, if there are no animals, no good.
An outfitter with a large camp is unlikely to move you any where else if there are no animals. Too many hunters, only so many camps. Also, a lot of hunters, too few staff to really give individual attention. By the time I got back I found my capes were not properly prepared and handled so my taxidermist couldn't do anything with them. I would love to have had a good shoulder mount, now I just have a rack on a plack.
If I were to do it again, I would pay a little more money, chech references, go with a smaller group, and do it right.
Good luck and safe shooting.

fetchmaxMe and my partners went to Quebec up by James/Hudson bay. $1200.00, We drove right to the camp from Flint, MI. 1450 miles one way. 36 hr drive. Semi guided. They tell you what km marker the herd is at and you go get them. We stayed Northern Caribou Adventures. Accomodations sucked but we were there to shoot Caribou. We got 12 between six guys in 2 days of hunting. Check out Nouchimi or The Mirage. They have alot better accomodations and are only about $100 more. We had to take our own food etc. At Mirage you take yourself and hunting equipment. You bring home all of your meat, whole or quartered. Your choice. We went over Thangsiving. Dont shoot the first 2 you See. Nouchimi Tourism 1800771CREE, Mirage 18193393150. One thing you should know. Some years they dont show up but they do have a chopper that can fly you to the herd if they are nearby. Good Luck.
