alabama piebald spike
A friend's dad shot this little dude last weekend. Too bad it was a little more mature.

The piebald condition is a genetic abnormality whereby some of the cells can produce melanin. These deer may have pigmented hooves, eyes, and skin like this deer; lacking pigment only in some areas of their pelt. Besides varying degrees of white fur, piebald deer may have other genetic abnormalities such as, short legs, a bowed nose, arching spine, short jaw bones, and oddly formed internal organs. The most severely deformed die soon after birth, but those with minor physical problems may live to adulthood. If you are interested in more, check out my new book "Deer of the Southwest" at deernut.com. It is focused on the SW, but has more than enough interesting biology (a whole chapter on antlers) to make it worth the $24.95 for anyone.
