Lead in Wyoming's ravens drops with copper bullets

Font Size: Default font size Larger font size Share JACKSON — Scientists with Craighead Beringia South say hunters who chose copper over lead bullets while hunting in the Jackson region helped to reduce blood lead levels in local ravens.

Last fall, researchers distributed nearly 200 boxes of copper bullets to hunters with permits for the National Elk Refuge and Grand Teton National Park. They captured 46 ravens and tested their blood for lead.

Ravens typically scavenge the discarded gut piles of elk and other big game, and researchers think they consume lead bullet fragments along with their meal.

Biologist Bryan Bedrosian says the tests done this year show about a 28 percent drop in blood lead levels in ravens and he attributes that to the increase in copper bullet use.

time to do a study on the effects of ski wax on the enviroment and i'm pretty sure Mt. bike tracks lead to erosion,not to mention how all the trees and bunnies are effected by the hugging.
and i'm soooo surprized this started in J-hole.
and think about the 4000 bullets led to such a significant decline in the lead levels of the captured ravens

Aren't ravens migratory??? How the hell are they attempting to sample a representative cohort of birds specific to the park?

More likely they're eating a lot of wolf kills, no bullets involved. Incidentally, copper is another biocide...

This is the same damn bullshit test that all the grizzlies around Yellowstone were dieing because they ate deer/elk that hunters had shot with lead bullets. Well if that is the case I should have been dead twentyfive years ago with all the lead in my teeth thanks to my dentist. I bet they didn't even do a freakin test.

Instead of wasting all that money on this test why don't they go out and build a water hole or kill some pine beetals.

What a skewed survey. You conduct a survey where there is a known concentration of dead elk and localized Ravens are feeding on them...on the Refuge. There is nothing "natural" about the refuge. They're Ravens anyway, who gives a shit?

Why don't the focus their efforts on eradicating the Pine Bark Beetle?

As far as the study, it's coming boys. They gave out 200 boxes of ammo -- what moron hunter would shoot ammo they haven't sighted in with? FWIW, Dutch.
