Alright, cartridges you love
Ok, let's get rid of some negativity here and go with a category of cartridges you love. I'm going out on a limb here if I judge it by the other two threads.
.22 Long Rifle
.243 Winchester
.308 Winchester
.30-06 Springfield
.454 Casull
12 gauge shotgun

.22-perfect practice and dirt cheap, great gopher, bunny, squirrel, and crow medicine.

.243- versatile as hell, great varmint round, rivals the Swift in velocity and accuracy, 100gr. Partition is a good deer load, I don't care what anyone says, it works

.308-efficient, terribly easy to load for, accurate as hell and easy on the shoulder

.30-06-the classic, need I say more? Suitable for anything on this continent, as long as it's not intent on eating me.

.454 Casull- plinker loads in the .45 Colt range that are fun to shoot all the way to elephant loads, and it's my lates acquisition in a TC Encore and 12" barrel, a load of fun!

12 gauge-covers everything else I shoot

I'll see your .22, your .454 Casull, and your 12 gauge and I'll raise you a 300 RUM just to irritate those who cry "you don't need an ultra", a .44mag for versatility, a .40 for self defense, a .45 ACP for nostalgia and a 7.62 x 39 for inexpensive centerfire plinking.

Brent
A .22 lr is hard to argue with as a favorite. WHICH .22 lr rifle is the hard part.

For centerfires,
a 12 bore shotgun for birds and
a .45-2.6" for everything else.

Love 'em all but if it comes down to it:

1) 22LR
2) .338 WinMag
3) 44 RemMag

Shotguns would be a toss up between 20 an 12ga.

I love anything that goes bang but these are what I just can't go without even though I want to add: 30-06, 416 Taylor, 6.5 X 55, 220Swift.

Groove Bullets
223 - dirt cheap ammo, fun to shoot

243 - great for coyotes and deer, ammo and bullets are readily available, low recoil

7mm mag - just because I have had one for so long.

300 win mag - largest selection of bullets.

375 H&H - ammo avialable most everywhere

There are many more I like but these are my favorites.other cartridges move into my favorite list from time to time but these ones seem to stay there.

Ok, lets see...30-30, 30-06, .338 Win Mag, 7mm Ultra Mag are my present favorites. I really enjoy the Ultra. It clouds up and rains every time the trigger is pulled! For you practical types who ask, "Is it really needed?" Probably not but so what? It is an exercise in big and loud and, Lord, but the thing shoots flat! It's fun! I'm busy trying to burn the barrel out and if it goes in 1000 to 1500 rounds big deal, new ones are just not that expensive. Anyway, those are my choices except maybe a .223 for pasture poodles, or a maybe a .375 H&H for...

.22LR - great for plinking, practising and the smallest game.
7x57R - perfect for bird-hunting combos and handles deer-sized game well.
.338 Win Mag - an all-around cartridge for big game. Great versatility, handles both close and long shots when loaded appropriately.
.45-70 - good for moose hunting here in Finland, where bush is thick. My favourite one-shot kill round. .458 is also good, but the guns are not as nice to handle.
.577 Nitro Express - for the biggest game. Hits like a train and never seems to fail.

I would not be handicapped with 4 guns. At least not in Wyoming. Judging by the extensive use of the 7x57 and .303 Brit. on everything alive in Africa I might go out on a limb and say a .308 could work there also.

I like it when this topic comes it, as it does every once in a while.

My favorites are as follows:

1.) 7mm Rem Mag - Has provided me with many wonderful hunting experiences.

2.) .303 British - I shot my first deer with it, and it continues to be my "go-to" gun for a lot of my hunting here in the U.S.

3.) .416 Rigby - Don't need to expand on that one

4.) .250 Savage - A new addition, but very effective on deer, and the Savage 99 is such an incredible rifle.

5.) 16 Gauge shotgun. A bit different, but very effective for upland birds, which constitute nearly all of my bird hunting.

Right now, those are my favorites....some might be added, but I bet none will be removed from that list. They have all proved themselves and will continue to do so.

Just a few of the all time best IMO

.223 quiet, powerfull, cheap to shoot and load and accurate as hell.

.257 AI Flat, fast, mild mannered and versatile.

8X57 Extremly underrated in the states and like the bob it is capable of "out of proportion" performance and Im hoplessly addicted to it. More 30-06 lovers should give this one a fair shake.

35 Whelen
I dont care what the gunwriters say, 35s are awsome and fill a vital N.A. niche extremly well.

375 H&H The quintessential plainsgame caliber.

45-70 Its reputation speaks for itself, the only one of its vintage that is still going strong.
