GojoeMaine Moose lottery time
It's moose lottery time in Maine. Success rate is 90+%, and it's relativly cheap for a non-resident to enter, Good luck.

FlagsThe application time for NH is also in full swing. NH often gets overlooked. I.ve already put in my app for NH. Will apply ffor maine before the week is out.

69deerGood Luck, I have been putting in for tags for years and have gotten nowhere in both states. N.H. has a better drawing sucess. The success rate for kills are high in both states but the odds of drawing are just the opposite. Good Luck!

ETA Just to be clear, There is a 90% success rate IF you have a permit. Sorry for any confusion.

If you get drawn locally, I'll tell you where the moose are. How about that?

NortonNR chances of drawing for moose in Maine = 1 in 700.....and preference points don't mean jack from what I'm told. There are residents there that have been applying for 15 years without success, many even longer than that. Over 100,000 hunters apply for ~3,200 permits per year.
From the ME F & G site:
"Alces alces americana
According to state wildlife biologists, Maine's moose population is estimated at 29,000. For the 2010 season, the success rate for hunters was 78 percent. Hunters killed 2,475 moose out of a possible 3,140 permits issued."
Here in NH I stand a 1 in 20 chance of drawing as a resident.....no luck in my first 6 years of trying so far.

AtticusAll I can say is "you never know". I was drawn in Maine in 2003 after only 4 years of putting in. The rules have changed now; allowing for unlimited purchases of chances, but I still put in 10 chances every year.
846 lbs, 50" taken near Masardis, ME. September 2003.

GojoeYou never know is right, I put in for 18 years before I got one in 2005. I've seen folks get 3 in the same family?? In 2008 the state allowed for preferance points, you accumulate your chances each year to increase your odds. It's like anything else you pays your money and you takes your chances. At least the drawning prices and not too bad. And if you win you'll likely get a moose. I see moose 5 out of 7 days a week just going to work. When I hear of someone not filling a tag I just scratch my head???

33806whelenI did Maine 9 fvckin years in a row, purchasing first 6, then 10 "chances" a year. Never got drawn.
I have heard so many corruptopn stories about the paper companies getting allotted many each year and even though you are only allowed 1 every three years, there's "priveleged" people that get tags every year.
I also heard Larry Weishun pays a pile of Maine residents to put him as an alternate and gives them the money for the drawing, and buys the tag if they get picked.

Do tell more? I live here and don't hear about these paper company permits. Who is this Larry Weishun? The list of the permitees is public, You would think someone would notice someone getting a permit evry year?? I waited 18 years, Dad got one the second or third year and never again. I seen folks get more than one over the years, or even multibles in the same family. None of these folk are the "privailaged class".

GojoeI almost forgot about my bud Tom. Tom lives in Iowa and in 1996 He put in on a lark. Opening day He shot a beautiful bull behind the house, 875lbs nice rack with a good palm. I still have it in the garage. It was a shame he tagged opening day. We had to spend the rest of the week hunting patridge.
Anyway play or not it's up to you.

JudgeGI have 13 preference points for whatever that means? I guess I've been applying for that many years?
I do wish that one got a "real" advantage for perservering instead of someone being able to buy a zillion chances their first year. I say that, but I bought 10 extra "chances" myself.

Wish me luck... and I'll be back here for recommendations if I do luck out and get a license!
JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

33806whelenYes, one preference point for each year. That would indicate you are on year 14.

What a shame that one can make assertions like these without proof.
31 January 2011, 04:29
33806whelenwhich assertions do you speak of there Norton? I have indeed applied for nine years, I'm sure I have the receipts around if it will make you sleep better.
A close personal friend of mine (not a friend of a friend) used to log up there for many years and it was from him directly that told me of the paper company corruption.
All one needs to do is recount all the shows Weishun has done on maine moose hunting over the years to verify the othe "assertion".

I don't doubt that you've not drawn after 9 years. I spoke to a resident ME guide up north who hadn't drawn in 12 years.
But if your friend had proof of corruption then why not make it public? ALL corruption gets exposed these days eventually.....and something like a lottery is hard to rig, no?
Wasn't an attack on you personally, I just hate baseless allegations.....the same ones float around NH. We live in a world where accusations can ruin people's lives....even if they've done nothing wrong.

MssgnI'm in the drawing and I plan to continue to be in the drawing every year that I can apply. Odds of getting drawn are only about 2% per entry, so with 10 cances you still only have about a 1 in 5 shot of getting picked.

I'm sure the odds are not that good or we would all be buying 50 chances and hunting every 5 years.

I would think a Guy like Larry would Bid on one of the Auction Tags if he really wanted to.
It is much joy that I report I received a call from a friend. He reports that my name was drawnfor a moose tag!!!!!!

AtticusCongratulations! Which zone did you draw?
Not luck for me this year. Thanks OK; my wife and I will be in South Dakota for Chickens and Sharptails in September and Vermont for Partridge and Woodcock in October. I probably could have fit in a moose hunt though. Maybe next year.

Amazing.....I've spoken to ME residents that haven't drawn in 25 years. Congrats.....but that just doesn't seem right.

jsl3170What can I say? My dad has put in every year since they started and zilch. This one is for him, though, as he is my sub. In 08 we shot one in the broccoli and this time I'd like to call one in. Need to start connecting with some locals.

33806whelenI've applied for a dozen years, using preference points and buying extra ticket entries to no avail! gets disheartening after a while. MAybe this year will be the one!

Aspen Hill AdventuresWhen I lived in Vermont the moose lottery was quite interesting. I never drew but several people in the same family would get tags every year. Made me wonder what they could possibly do with all that moose meat?

Where are your photos from last year?
06 March 2020, 09:32
GojoeI don't have any pictures from last year as my hunt was in 2011. And I don't have any pictures from that hunt on my current media. But if I draw this year, I promise to post a photo essay.
Cheers

TREE 'EMI applied in VT, NH & ME for a dozen or so years until I moved away from VT in 2002. Never drew a tag. I did observe some “lucky” folks who seemed to have a family member draw every year or two.
My buddy Craig drew a ME tag in 2018 after about 25-30 years of applying.
I’ve started putting in again and buying my youngest son preference points so that maybe he’ll get drawn before he’s 40.

HoytshooterWe drew last year after 17 years of applying. My dad let me shoot the bull since he had shot a bull previously. I shot a great 50.5” bull that went 896lbs. He was 7.5 years old according to Maine game and fish. Can’t wait to do it again. Since I have 18 points. Can not figure out how to post pics on here.
