Wyoming Late Cow Elk Hunt Question
A friend and I are planing on Hunting one of the late Cow hunts in Area 61 this year. We are planing on going December 10th through the 18th. Is this a good time to go? I was also told by a guy who lives out there that if I had a four wheeler to bring it for this area. Would I get any use out of it if I brought it? I really do not like hunting next to crowds and my fear is if I bring it I will be hunting with everyone else who has a four wheeler driving up and down the same trails that kinda thing. My friend and I are not affraid to walk a extra mile or two to get away from people and find some Elk.

ELKMAN2I have not hunted 61, but I use my ATV in the Big Horns on the east side. What you use them for is driving down trails to get to a point to park it then we walk 1-3 miles from there. I doubt you can seriously hunt from one any way. I ride 8-10 miles each morning to get to my hunting areas. Snow may be a limiting factor for you that late. Good luck..P

wyotysonThe only way to get away from the crowds on that hunt is to horseback or hike into the wilderness portion of the area. There is only one road that goes up Carter mountain that is accsessable to the general public and it concentrates the crowds no matter what your mode of transportation is. The road is rough so you will save alot of wear on your truck if you have a 4 -wheeler. There are also some private ranches in the low country that will let you hunt for a tresspass fee if you are into that.
It can be hit and miss, depends on the winter and the snow. Best bet is to pay $100 for trespass fee and go on a ranch!
Thanks for the info guys. I will bring the Wheeler and hope for the best. I hope there is snow and it is cold when we go.
