GatogordoMulie taken at 493 yards with a 6.5 Grendel M4 Carbine.
It was a fine shot and a nice result. Why all the bitching?
Could it have gone bad? Of course, but that's true anytime we pull the trigger with any gun. Anyone who claims never to have had a bad result with a shot simply hasn't shot much. Shit happens everyday. In this case it didn't, so congratulations are in order. If someone doesn't like someone else's methods or equipment, then I recommend they not use them. There are many roads to the same place.

Exactly where is the cut off. At what exact yardage do shots become unethical?? I really want to hear this one. Careful becaues defining ethics by a certain yardage is treading on a very slipery slope

Only if you are doing it, because you obviously have no clue.

I suppose that you wouldn't think much of my 1 shot DRT kill at a lasered 777 yards would you? There are those that can and those that can't and you have shown conclusively which one that you are

I'm willing to wager a hefty sum that you haven't a clue what part if any FPE plays in an inelastic collision, which is what a bullet strike is.

So what's your point? If you can make a hole completely through an animal at any range, the caliber and energy of the projectile is meaningless?

And whitworth,
Very unclear

rcamugliaDisagreeing and posting supporting facts is not "a pissing contest"
Since you're on the other side of the arguement, a advocate of the use of puny cartridges on big game animals at extended ranges, you believe anyone's input of factual info to the contrary has no merit.
Hardly a pissing contest...
30 October 2010, 13:45
GracedogPerhaps they should just settle it all by pursuing cape buffalo with a 223, and see what happens. At least they'll have a good running start due to the distances they like to shoot from. Then again, people that are so married to extreme distance shooting at game usually are that way due to their reluctance to give up that warm seat in the pick up truck. The fact of the matter is this: hunting bullets are designed to perform at relatively narrow velocity parameters, and shooting game outside of these parameters shows disregard for the game. End of story.
30 October 2010, 17:44
WhitworthNot advocating the use of "puny" cartridges for the sake of doing it. The round used here was obviously up to the task judging by the results. The shooter was another factor in the success of this hunt (they always are). As a handgun hunter almost exclusively nowadays, I bristle when muzzle energy enters the "discussion." Why, because on paper (and muzzle energy is not something measured, it's calculated), even the .30-30 makes a .500 Linebaugh look way "underpowered." Having hunted with these big caliber handguns for years, I can assure you that they are very effective and that ME plays no role.

Bob in TXI know I shouldn't post again because it will fall on deaf ears, but the velocity was 2500 fps., not 2200 fps. The ft/lbs. of energy at 500 yards is 758, not "a bit over 400". The holdover is 5', not 8'.
Just to keep to the facts of the hunt.
It is really sad to see all the threads were you guys feel the need to go in and piss all over the hunter.

This has two distinct baloney points ro wit:
1. You actually believe the OP story
2. You believe a 4th standard deviation result is typical
Oh....BTW....Bob in TX.....It's 2200 and 8' and 430 Ft-lb

I don't want you to have to waste your time going back through this entire thread to get caught up, so I'll try to answer your question by summarizing what happened and why smack and his bro chose the caliber and the range....
1. They both are X or current military
2. They built a Grendel
3. Their Hero Mark Larue killed an elk with one at 405
4. They wanted to top that
5. They used the Grendel because they can't read wind as well
