300wsm----300rem sa
Looking for a new rifle.I have a 340whby so long range is covered. Been looking at the 300wsm or 300rem ultra sa, maybe even a 270sm. I like the rem model seven, looks like a nice carry gun, with the 22" barrel.I also like the model 70, weight wise there close. Any other comments on rifle or caliber?Just wanted some pros & cons from you all that have had either rifle or caliber .

I'd be looking at a 308win, 7-08 in the Model 7. In a Win 70, I would choose 30/06 or a 270Win. Why not a short mag? Less rounds in the mag and feeding problems. With your 340 and one of the forementioned cartridges you would have the bases covered. MtnHtr

I'm a WSM fan. If I had the 340 Weatherby I'd be looking at the .270 WSM. (That, or a 25.06 Rem.)

Kevin, I'd look at it this way..........

For the sake of this discussion, call the 30-06 in a 22" your baseline

What is your top priority for this rifle? Is it (#1) good power from a nice short light gun? or is it (#2) the max power available from a short action?

If it is #1 then go with the Remington. It is 30-06 (plus 150 fps) in a lighter rifle. So far I don't hear very many complaints about the Reminton offering.

If it is #2, then go with the winny, It is 30-06 (plus 225-250 fps) in a heavier rifle with a very negative reputation at this point.

Flame on Wichester fans, but the "net" is clogged with people complaining about problems with their guns. (I KNOW, I KNOW, "YOUR'S IS PERFECT").....but a lot of 'em aren't.

So Kevin......if your priority is #1, buy the Rem. and don't look back. If your priority is #2, then you might wait a year or so until Winchester gets their package "finished"

'Twere me, and I already had a 340, I'd get the Remington.

With apologies to JimF.

If you have a long range gun in the 340 that you are happy with and are looking for a "short range" gun then why not look at something that is further from the range and power of a 340 than a 30-06? I would think a .260 or a .257 roberts maybe a 7-08.

My two cents worth....

Hey Jim:

No apologies required, I'm with you all the way. I have one 7-08 and am building another, (or maybe a 308??) and I'm an unrepentant fan of the Bob. I don't own anything that burns 60 gr. of powder, and don't plan on getting one.

However, Kevin asked about the 300's so that's what I replied to. Actually his choice s/be more about the package it comes wrapped in. Since K did not mention his chosen game, I assume he has a reason for his prospective choices.
