Elk done old school.
Shot this guy on Saturday at about 100 yards on public land here in Colorado using my Duane Wiebe-built Winchester/Browning Model 95 lever gun in .35 Whelen, launching a 250-grain Nosler Partition at about 2,400 feet per second.

Great looking area. What part of CO?

Gosh, 2400fps? Maybe I don't need this
3260fps .358U/M after all.

Great picture, thanks for sharing with us.

Since you asked, the elk was taken in Unit 15 near Steamboat Springs. I have hunted the area about 30 seasons since 1980 and have taken somewhere around 23 elk from it, most on public land. This guy is a 5x6, and had a carcass weight of 340 pounds. Interestingly, he had essentially no fat on him, but was obviously healthy and well muscled.

Also, as requested, some closeups of the rifle:

Thank you for the general area. I hunted
up there one year and didn't see a thing other than nice bucks in posted pastures. Too far for me to drive cornerwise of the state to get skunked. I can do that closer to home.

Beautiful stick of wood. sure don't look like it's been hunted with much, no scabs in sight.

Great pics too.

The rifle has actually been hunted quite a bit. At Duane's recommendation, I put a coat of finish on it annually, which does a great job of hiding the minor dings in the wood. I use a silicone cloth on the metal after each use, which helps protect the bluing.
