No packing this elk naked
Well you might remember that last year Jacob swam to help a hunter get his elk. Well Jacob got his own elk this year. He is one happy young man. It was a one shot kill. He shot the cow at 345 yards and the 270 winchester with a 140 gr Hornady yanked the rug on this lead cow. The heard started to mill and then left. Some other hunters got a spike and then they helped us by packing the elk out on their 4 wheelers. It was a great day. Ron

Tell Jacob Congrats!!

It is good to hear that Jacob had helped that one hunter (in the earlier thread), and then this year he got helped out with his.

345yd is a heck of a shot!

Fantastic job by the young man and father alike.
You should both be very proud. Big congrats!

P.S. NOT trying to be a spoilsport here, and I'm sure it was unloaded, but that rifle pointed at your boy's chest with the bolt closed make me cringe a teeny bit...

Thanks guys. The rifle while it looks to be pointing at him was actually not pointing at him but about foot to his right. The gun was unloaded I saw him unload all the bullets and magazine. I can appreciate the concern but it was not pointing at him. Thanks again

Good job, and a nice elk. congrats.

I hope all those naysayers who say you cant take an elk with anything less than a 338 wm look at this post. .270 is a great round, and this shows what it can do, even with a little distance........

Great job.

Why let him shoot the lead cow? Generally your older cow and on a meat hunt, not smart.

Congrats to Jacob and to you as well. His unselfish action last season is the kind of deed we should all aspire to.

Nice shooting, too!

Give me a break...

This is a teenager who was simply thrilled to get the opportunity to take an elk. While I was not there and can only surmise, I'd wager that the first good, clean, safe shot opportunity that presented itself was the one taken.

When our oldest took his first whitetail, he was THRILLED and did not care if it was a doe or a record buck (it was a young doe, by the way). Don't try and curb the exuberance of youth. There's plenty time for hunters to start concerning themselves with the best meat animal or the best rack or whatever floats their boats.

Just be thankful that some of today's youth is actually out there hunting instead of gluing themselves to a TV screen and playing video games all day long... Big Grin

Congratulations Jacob. Now you know the meaning of what goes around (your generosity last year), comes around (help this year).
May you always be as good as you are now.

Jacob. Good on you. And always remember that there are folks who will play down whatever you may accomplish. This "SG olds" is not one of us, he is one of them. There are no negatives to your hunt and your shot. thumb

Thanks again guys.
There were a couple of reasons I had him shoot the lead cow. First was his hunt was cow only. She was the first cow to come into range. And I knew for a fact he could pick out the lead cow and stay on her. I didn't want him to get confused and shoot a bull by mistake. Also we were on the trail to the bedding area. There were a lot of other guys hunting the area so he had to get her down as quick as he could or the other guys were going to be on them. That day was the opening day for Youth cows and a open spike hunt. Several hundred hunters hit the area that day.
I am not worried about her being tough. We make hamburger out of most of the elk anyway.
Jacob also thanks you guys for the attaboys.
He is a good kid. Ron
