AR defines a "big bore" as .375 and larger.

exceptions are made for the 9.3 X 62.....(.366)

If you want opinions, I have a fresh bunch that are worth exactly what you pay for them.

In the US, I would say bigger than .338 caliber

In Africa, I would say bigger than .40 caliber.

.512 50 cal BMG In my openion is considered a big bore ! anything under that is acceptable for chip monks ! You can load a 50 with sabots to shoot 30 calibers and shoot squirls

I always thought it was .40 caliber or larger.

So is a lever gun in .41 Mag a big bore...and a .378 Weatherby isn't?

Conversations like this are fun, but dang it, who is in charge of making up these rules!?!?!? Big Grin

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense.

Since 9.3 is the smalles legal for whale shoting, I regard it and everything above as big bore. Big Grin

My own personal perception of the categorizing thing goes something like

Sub cal to about .25 cal = small bore

6.5 to 8mm = medium

338 on up is bear fodder

Its obviously one of those very subjective things that we hunters love to argue about. Big Grin

I think the Army considers anything .50 cal or smaller as small arms. I consider several of the posters in the Crater as Big Bores. Hope that helps.

G'day. From what I have been able to find on the subject. Traditionally, small bores are 7mm and under, medium bores are between 7mm (.284 cal) and 39 cal, and big bores were 40cal and over. But then, appearently, there is a seperate class of big bore called 'stopping rifles', based on energy, but it does seem to be largely based on African useage.
Surely someone can expand on that?
