I am looking at planting food plots on two patches in north central Texas, Montague county to be precise, and am wondering what type of blend to use. It will be for deer and turkey, about 2 acres total. Is there a different blend for spring and fall? I have access to tractor with implements and have plenty of experience farming, but wanted some advise on what to plant, or where to find a blend. Any help is appreciated.

Spring or fall plot? Yes, there is a difference.

Cow peas work well, but 2 acres is not enough to allow them protection from overgrazing. I think it is a waste of time and money unless you can plant 20 acres or so of cowpeas.

In the winter, a 1/3 mix of each, wheat, oats, rye topped with arrowleaf clover seems to be a pretty good mix that I like. Be sure to innoculate the clover to fix nitrogen for your grains.

You can plant Austrian winter peas, but once again, too small a plot to expect them to mature.

Not sure what your soil is like there. It is important to get the soil tested and follow the test results for fertilizer and lime, (if you need it). Some areas do not need it so be sure to test it. But, I am sure you already know about this if you have farming experience.
