Kentucky considers new bear season
Ky. considers new bear season
THE (LOUISVILLE) COURIER-JOURNAL

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission has recommended establishing a bear-hunting season for next year. At its quarterly meeting last week in Frankfort, the board also proposed a late-season antlerless elk hunt on private land.

The nine-member commission sets all game and fish regulations. Its recommendations must be approved by the General Assembly.

The proposed resident-only bear season would be Dec. 19-20, 2009, in Harlan, Letcher and Pike counties, excluding the Hensley-Pine Mountain Wildlife Management Area. Hunters would be allowed to use modern firearms, muzzleloaders, crossbows or archery gear.

The season quota would be 10 bears or five female bears, whichever limit is reached first. Bears would have to be taken to a check station by 8 p.m. on the day of the kill and telechecked by midnight the same day.

Ok, I don't see how this would work.

If I had 100 hunters in the field hunting on December 19 and they had a 20% success rate, thats 20 bears day one and possibly 15 bears over the limit if they are all females?

Maybe there isn't that big of a bear population and siting 20 to 30 bears a day in this area in not realistic.

If it is anything like their first elk hunt they only put out about 12 tags. So they will only put out about 25 tags at the most and and a game warden breathing down your neck same as the elk hunt.
