Best Calls Roe Deer??
Now we seem to have a few European Roe stalkers I'd be interested to know which
calls you guys recommend for the Roe.
Two of the more popular calls over here are the rubber Buttolo and the Hubertus cherry wood call. I have had quite a bit of success with the latter, but not much with the buttolo..I suspect this needs tuning. What I would really like is a Gerschrei/terror call of similar design to the Hubertus cherry wood ie a fixed, tunable reed. I know that Faulhaber make one in their 4 call Roe set, but I have not seen one sold on it's own. I would buy the Faulhaber set but I don't know how well it works. In particular, I don't know what the difference is between the Schmalrehfiep and Sprengfiep calls nor how to use them correctly. A friend has the Richard Prior Roe call which is able to produce the Gerschrei/terror call but being an open reed design it needs considerable practice and it is very easy to blow the wrong notes with! So what do you guys use/recommend?

I use the Buttolo. I think it's simple to use and it works just fine, unless you keep it in your backpocket and forgets about it when you take a seat somewhere

I've used another call but don't remember it's name. It's small wooden pipe with a screw that let's you change the tune to imitate different calls. I find it to work just fine if you remember to keep it tuned correctly. But it's a pain to produce calls with different pitch(as the rut or terror call) as you have to move the screw.

No, I prefer the buttolo. It's easy to keep it in your pocket while calling and it's easy to make the 2 or 3 different calls you might need.

PCH,

The wooden call you mention sounds like the
Hubertus Cherry wood one...I don't mind changing the screw to go from the Fawn to the Doe squeak but it just won't do the Terror Call.

After posting last night I pulled my Buttolo
apart and found some crap in there. Hopefully
with a little careful tuning I can get it
serviceable again. I had to give up last night as it was driving my Border Terrier nuts!!:-)

I'm really hoping somebody can provide more info on the Faulhaber set as I'm going to a deer fair the weekend after next where I hope to buy one

Been only using the Buttolo so far, and with good result on Roe buck.
I have no experience with the Faulhaber or the other calls mentioned, the Buttolo are ruling in my neighborhood.

Thanks Guys!

I managed to tune the Buttolo again so it sounds reasonable like what I'm after. The only trouble is I have to wait another 12 months to see the results:-)

I might just get the Faulhabare set as a "spare"!

Pete,

The bucks are still coming into calls here in Berkshire. I called one that I bumped into with my Butalo (last Tuesday). The muntjac are responding well to the terror call, 5 bucks so far. For me it's the Butalo every time. I did once call a muntjac with my son's toy flute that I once used for foxing when I had lost my fox call!

I personaly think it's less the call and more the atmospheric conditions, proximity and randiness/aggressiveness/curiosity of the deer.
